Show D Stress From page 9 pericncc palpitations. Muscle tension increases, leading to headaches, dizziness, aches and pains and even insomnia. One sophomore student commented that stress often caused her to wake up in the morning finding her jaw and fists clenched, as well as feeling so fatigued that it would appear she hadn't slept all night. Mentally, stress produces jumbled or confused thoughts. Thinking becomes centered around worrying, seemingly insurmountable problems override any thoughts of resolve and it eventually becomes harder to make decisions and rise abovp the immediate anxiety. Emotionally and socially irritability, impatience and frustration begin to occur frequently. Stress takes over and changes the personality and behavior towards others. Students, especially, complain that when they feel stressed out they find it hard to concentrate on school and begin to miss important lectures and deadlines. The important thing with learning to deal with stress is to take control of it before it controls you. Confront the problem head on and find a balance to begin equalizing the stressful aspects of life. Prioritize daily responsibilities and learn to say "no." Not leaving things to the last minute or avoiding the issue all help to reduce stress in the end. Find time to relax and time in which you can choose to do what you want. Listen to comforting music, get a massage, take a hot bath, spend time with friends, treat yourself to something special. Sports and physical activities are excellent distractions because not only does it help to relax physically, it also releases endorphins in the body which produce a feeling of well-being. Eating right and avoiding caffeine or other stimulants also helps to significantly reduce internal stress and keep the body alert and energized. Talking, writing and learning to express feelings that may build up into stress also help to keep a stable balance. Getting the appropriate amount of sleep and taking breaks during the day will all prove to be beneficial. In short, develop a system of balance and equilibrium. In a quote from The American Institute of Stress it states, "It stress is very much like the stress on a violin string. Not enough produces a dull raspy sound. Too much makes a shrill, annoying noise, or causes the string to snap. However, just the right degree can create magnificent tones. Similarly, we all need to find the proper level of stress that promotes optimal performance, and enables us to make melodious music." Vm could end up here. . ,4 lEME'R'SENCY by not obeying the new traffic light on Edivalson Street near the LDS Institute. A new traffic signal which will stop traffic so that pedestrians can cross safely is now in operation; however, students must be patient and wait for the light to change before crossing the street. Crossing the street when the signal is green is not only illegal, it increases the likelyhood of being involved in an auto-pedestrian accident.
