"We are really excited about getting students introduced to semesters and to the university," said Matt Harker, Association of Registered Organizations chair. Welcome Week is always held during the first week of school Open hour changes to alternating weeks By Kari Lynn Harland news editor-The Signpost 'Change' seems to be the theme word for 1 998 fall semester at Weber State University and Open Hour is no exception. Working together. Convocations and Honors Issues Forum have made many changes to make Open Hour less chaotic and more interesting. Instead of Convocations and Honors Issues Forum fighting for attention by being held at the same time, now they will alternate back and forth each week at 10 a.m. on Thursdays. "We didn't want to cannibalize each other anymore," said Wesley Hanna. Honors Issues chair. Jozef Pawloski, Convocations chair, agreed but said it was also to have the opportunity to improve the quality of the sessions. "In the past, in the surveys we did. people said we didn't bring enough people with national appeal." he said. "Now we can be more selective." To start off the year, Honors Issues will hold its first forum, "Suits on Semesters." Thursday in the Wildcat Theater featuring WSU president Paul H.Thompson and Provost Dave Eisler. The forum is to discuss the changes semesters has brought about. Thompson and Eisler will try to answer questions the audience may have. "It's an informative forum not a controversial one," Hanna said. "It's a procrastination party for everyone who doesn't understand the semesters yet." Hanna said he tried to set the forum up in a "Men in Black" style and though Thompson and Eisler won't be wearing black suits, they will be sliding on black sunglasses. There will also be four $ 100 gift certificates to the bookstore given away as door prize's. Convocations highlight of the semester will be "The X-files'" William B. Davis who will come in character as The Cancer Man just in time inside post news seepage 2 &3 and is a way to introduce new students to the school and welcome back old ones, but this year the theme is centered around the semester conversion. "It's a first for everybody," Harker said. "We are welcoming in semesters at Weber State and leaving behind the quarters." Many clubs and organizations at WSU have also come together to introduce themselves to the student body and encourage them to be involved at the University. Different organizations are host- . "i ... William B. Davis, The Cancer Man of "The X-files" is coming to Convocations in October. for Halloween on Oct: 29 in the Shepherd Union Building Ballroom. Davis is the ultimate bad guy and dark figure of the show and movie and will talk about the world of paranormal and paranoia. Pawloski is excited about this semester's line-up. He said that Convocations used to mostly use people who were already going to be at Utah State University or Brigham Young University, but now he has people coming whose only stop in Utah is WSU. "We didn't want to piggyback anymore," he said. "We make the speakers sign an exclusive contract, so they can't speak anywhere else in Utah." Pawloski said this will boost the quality of their Convocations and give WSU a better name. "If students want to see the best speakers, they are going to have to come to Weber," he said. "You won't see the Cancer Man or Eric Saperston anywhere else in Utah." Also different this year is the starting of town meet- See Change page 3 editorial see page 4 ing events throughout the week. "The main idea for the clubs is to show students what they are all about, " Marker said. There will be more than 130 information booths set up between the Miller Administration Building and the. Stewart Bell Tower Plaza representing different organizations, student services and businesses. At any time during the week, students can go to those booths to get more information or contact any clubpersonally. F.Y.I. Abegglen returns for last basketball By Kari Lynn Harland news ed'noT-The Signpost Weber State University men's basketball coach Ron Abegglen was reinstated after being on administrative leave most of the summer but said this will be his last year coaching at WSU. WSU officials put Abegglen on administrative leave July 14 after his wife, Nedra, filed for a protective order against him. After extensive deliberation, Abegglen was reinstated Aug. 4. At the same time, Abegglen announced 1998-99 will be his last season coaching at WSU. a&e see page 6 "It's going to be an awesome activity for people to mingle," Harker said. Activities include a wheelchair race, raffles giving away certificates to many different vendors across campus as prizes, a pre-game party, a post-game party and various other things. Most of the activities will be centered at the Bell Tower Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. "Students can just jump right into the activities. They can also i t "it V Since his seven-year contract with WSU vvill end after only three years, the university has agreed to pay Abegglen $95,000 upon retirement. "Coach Abegglen and I have reviewed this situation carefully and agree this is best for our men's basketball program and for Weber State University," WSU President Paul H. Thompson said. This will be Abegglen's eighth season at WSU in which he has never had a losing season. "I've been coaching for 38 years that's two careers for the average coach." he said. On Thursday at 10 a.m. the Honors Issue Forum will feature "Suit on Semesters" in the Shepherd Union Wildcat Theater. During a question and answer session about the benefits and differences of the semester system, both WSU President Paul H. Thompson and Provost Dave Eisler will speak.
