You've got to let your eyes adjust.Sorry about your suit but I can't do nothing about the dust. M James Taylor "Down in a Hole" Utah is known far and wide for its mountains and the great heights to w hich they reach. Very seldom do people think of the wonders the earth holds below the surface. In Park City, the world extends into the ground farther than it extends above the ground. The Park City Silver Mine Adventure takes guests 1,500 feet underground and through 3,200 feet of tunnel to a world virtually unknown to the everyday joe. The Silver Mine Adventure provides a chance for visitors to experience the life f a miner for about two and a half hours, or at least see where they spent ten hours of their day. The Silver Mine began operation in the 1890s and was shut down because of the low price of silver in the 1980s. For ninety years this silver mine provided a living for thousands of workers and produced approximately twenty millionaires when producing silver. While on the tour, facts and experiences are shared by the tour guides, some of whom were miners when the mine shut down. While underground, your senses are introduced to entirely new surroundings. The temperature is about 55 degrees year round. There is a cool breeze blowing through the hallowed tunnels and darkness is abundant. In preparing the tunnels for tours, electrical lighting has been installed which is periodically turned off during the tour to illustrate the immense darkness miners worked in. The tunnels in which the tours are conducted are only the second deepest tunnels in the Park City mines. The mines actually extend 33 feet into the ground, but are closed because they are filled with water. The Silver Mine Adventure is located off the Kimball Junction exit to Park City on Route 224 one and a half miles into town. The adventure is open to the public year round seven days a week. Minimum age for admittance is four years old and anyone willing to brave the cramped elevator ride down the shaft is welcome to embark on the journey. Admission prices are $14 for adults, $10.50 for seniors and children. Groups of 15 or more can call (801) 655-7414 for group rate information.
