Six WSU students pass German business exam By Sherry Holmes news writer-77ie Signpost Six Weber State University students scored above average on the German business examination Prufung Wirtchaftsdeutsch. The students were among 146 business professionals and college students across the country who took the comprehensive and technical test. Majors in foreign language and or business Darren Bingham, Gardner Crane, Steven Heinze, Daniel Penrod and Brett Poban, of Ogden, and Andrew Smith of Manhattan, Kan. passed the test, which consisted of three hours written examination and 30 minutes of oral testing in the form of conversation. Erika Daines, WSU foreign language instructor said, "We had five of them above the national average in the written part, and seven above the national average in the oral part. Of the 127 that passed it in the entire U.S., eight of them took the test at WSU. For Utah that's sensational." The students prepared for the exam for a year, learning German business practices, business setups and organizational details, Daines said. Participants must be able to prove they can function on the middle-mangemcnt level of any German company. Smith, a senior double-majoring in German and English with a minor in legal studies, said he was surprised he passed the exam. "I hadn't had a business German class for a year," he said. "I figured I would take it this year and fail and then take it again next year and pass. I considered this a warm-up." The students will have an advantage when applying to German companies, Daines said. Daines, a native of Hannover Germany, began teaching a German course at WSU nine years ago. This., year she was accredited to administer the internationally recognized test. "It's quite an honor for the university to be able to administer the test," "Smith said. "It demonstrates the strength of the WSU Germanprogram." (mssttsm I . j If you find an error in The Signpost, please contact the section editor or the editor in chief.
