Show XL Football spirals through time if ' "si By Jared Page Signpost sports editor You are about to take a trip through time, sports fans. So, sit back in your easy chairs, hold on to your remote controls and get ready to take a leap into the future. Forget that it's 1994 and closing in on yet another exciting season of Weber State University football. Instead, it's the summer of 1998. On your way to class, you pick up a copy of The Signpost (as you do every Tuesday), turn to the Sports section and read the headline: Students remember the 'glory days' The saying time heals all wounds" is a lie. At least, thafs what seniors on the campus of Weber State University are saying. It's been three years since WSUsaid "goodbye" to the gridiron as the Board of Trustees voted to do away with the football program due to a lack of support and funding. While younger students may be used to the idea, seniors say that being here for the "glory years" makes football hard to forget. "I started school here during the summer of 1994 and went to every home game during the final season," WSU senior Jake Mullen said. "Maybe it's easier for the students who have never known WSU to have football, but I sure miss it." Mullen is not alone in his feelings and who can blame him after watching the Wildcats pull off a huge upset by posting a 8-3 record, on their way to a first-place tie in the Big Sky Conference. Who can forget the sensational year had by junior quarterback Bryan Martin, as he led the Big Sky's top passing offense? Martin's 2,457 yards passing in a single season ranks him seventh in that category in school history. Let's not forget the impenetrable Wildcat defense, which was rated first in all of Division l-AA football. Led by All-American Rob Hitchcock's five interceptions and Derrick Beatty's nation leading turnover return yardage, the Wildcats dismantled its opposition. Despite another solid performance by the Wildcats, an average of only 7,500 fans witnessed the home games. The mark was 6,500 too low to show "overwhelming support" for football. The Wildcats also failed to meet guidelines for "substantial support, " defined as an average home attendance of at least 10,000. Obtaining this goal would have allowed the program to continue, but at a reduced level. Once again, the goal was not achieved, the football program was dissolved and students are left to remember the way it was. "When I was a freshman, I didn't go to any of the football games," senior Willie Cash said. "Now I wish that I had. " I realize this was just an exercise in creative writing, but it is also one story that I hope I never have to write again. j PHOTO BY JOHN R. SHUPE WSU head coach Dave Arslanian cheers his team on to yet another winning season in 1993-94. But what would life be like without football at WSU? It's hard to imagine what college life would be like without a football team at WSU. Unfortunately, if we as students don't get behind our team this year, the above story could become fact rather than fiction. If there was ever a time that we, as students, needed to unite in a cause, it's now. If we let our football program slip away, we can watch our school pride vanish right along with it. We've all heard the nicknames for We ber State, whether it's "Harrison High," "WienerState" or "WS-Who?" Let's put an end to the misconception that WSU has no campus life and that we are all just outcasts from BYU, Utah and Utah State. If there was ever a chance to prove ourselves, it's now. Whether the team has yet another winning season or if it goes 0-11, it doesn't matter. The football program needs our help and I, for one, will do everything I can to help it. So, I'll see you on Sept. 3. Look for me. I'll be the one in purple. The Signpost does not endorse, promote or encourage the purchase or sale of any product or service advertised in this newspaper.
