Cats survive cuts Several former Weber football players have survived early summer cuts and are still vying for a permanent spot on a professional football team roster. Some other Weber hopefuls, however, have already felt the roster axe. Among those who have been cut are quarterback Dave Stireman and tight end Craig Slama. Last year, Stireman led a Wildcat offense that led the national with an average of 516 yards a game. The Saskatchewan Roughriders released Stireman, and Slama was cut by Calgary Stampeders. Saskatchewan also cut former Weber State linebacker Mike Powell while the Green Bay Packers released defensive back Gilbert Vasquez. Those who are still sweating it out at training camp with the regular season only five weeks away are running back Freddie Cook, Kevin Villars and Darryl Pollard. Cook is still with Saskatchewan, while Villars is with the St. Louis Cardinals and Pollard with the Seattle Seahawks. Three other former purple and whiters are still in USFL training camps center Craig Dumity and linebacker Danny Rich with the Birmingham Stallions and wide receiver Gerald Bradley with the Memphis Showboats. Todd Boyer, former Wildcat defensive back, has returned home with a knee injury from a tryout in European football.
