I Dol is celebrated. John Champman, of the New York Daily News said, "It's an affectionate hymn to the profound joys and petty irritations of 50 years of marriage ... a charming, disarming comedy with music." The musical is a period piece which covers 50 years of a marriage that begins just before the turn of the century. It is about one couple's marriage and of all marriages in general. Richard Watts of the New York Post said that in this day, when marriages are often viewed as a temporary institution, it is "a sheer delight, this view of the brighter side of matrimony it's charming, tuneful, warm-hearted. It is a thoroughly winning evening of enchantment." This musical has exactly two people in the cast. Some of the greatest stars of the American stage have played the characters of Agnes and Michael, including Robert Preston, Mary Martin, Carol Lawrence, Gordon MacRae, Lee Remick and Hal Linden. The Utah Musical Theatre production of Do! I Dol will star Phillip George and Wendy Baila. They are both New York-based performers and are delighted to have a chance to work together here in Beach Boys bring 'good vibrations' to Utah Carol Ritter Staff Reporter The Beach Boys brought good vibrations to 15,000 young and old people who were in attendance at Park West on Friday evening, July 18. For 90 minutes, there was "Fun, Fun, Fun" that packed the entire night with mainly old hits. "California Girls" was one big number. "Surfin' In The U.S.A." was another crowd pleaser. When it was played, everyone sang along. And although many people in the audience had never surfed before, the Beach Boys confessed that they had never either. The crowd was wild that night. Six hours before the Beach Boys' arrival, people had crowded in front of the stage hoping to get a better look at the group's members. During the concert, the Beach Boys even stopped playing to try to move the audience away a bit. But, to no avail. Security guards came face to face with many problems that night. They were forced to handle several fights in addition to other unpleasant situations that occurred. Before the concert had begun, the Beach Boys had cautioned Security that it might be best to blend into the crowd by wearing T-shirts. But as the aggressiveness and violence of the crowd increased, the band advised them to "buckle-up" into their uniforms. Instructor (cont'd from page 5) plan gradually dissolved. "I like the area," he said. "It's a nice community, nice size. I like the school. The art department is excellent, and I like teaching." About eight years ago, Bryner said a friend of his suggested they begin a glass cutting business. "Why not?" he thought as he and his friend took off to Boulder and Denver, Colorado to look into the field. He reflects back now, after many successes in glass cutting. "One of my major undertakings was the Commercial Security building in Salt Lake City. It was a $150,000 job and a little scary." Not only has Bryner designed cut glass windows for public buildings (the glass canopy for Weinstock's in Salt Lake) and many dignitaries' homes (the doors of the Lindquist home), he has helped interior designers, architects and sculptors. Currently, Bryner is working on projects for a Botie, the band's truck driver, hooked up the big diesel in an effort to get ready to leave in a hurry. Security saw to it that the Beach Boys made a smooth departure. As some kids from Finland started to leave, they said, "We haven't any beaches in Finland, so we had to come to America to see the Beach Boys!" As the Beach Boys started walking off the stage, Kaisa, a girl from Finland hollored, "Give us more, Beach Boys!" Other fans made comments too: Mina Cooper, a Los Angeles resident, said, "They'll always be the best!" "The Beach Boys are the best since the Beatles," said Julie Hancy, from Bountiful, Utah. Another Utah resident, Craig Reese, commented, "They beach all others!" Most of the audience enjoyed singing along with the Beach Boysespecially since they knew all the words! The Beach Boys are America's band. Every fourth of July, they give a concert in Washington D.C. One time, they brought over 500 thousand people together to celebrate Independence Day! These musicians are a hit with every age group. They bridge the age gap between young and old. Practically everyone loves them. Dave Love, a Beach Boy, said, "The Beach Boys are truly America's band!" telephone message service (designing a logo) and for a ski manufacturing company in Salt Lake (creating unique and elaborate designs on skis). In his spare time, Bryner likes to do a lot of pencil drawing. One look at his work table might have suggested this. A row of flat boxes lines the top edge of the desk next to the wall. In them are a number of colored pencils. One box contains many black and gray ones; in another one, various shades of yellow; in another, several shades of blue; and so on. Bryner also likes photography. He has shot on location in such places as Portugal, Spain and Japan. He said he loves challenges. It's quite obvious he has tackled many he is a master of all trades when it comes to the wide field of art, and he's learned them all slowly, one step at a time. "You need time and some reason to do any kind of work," he said, "not just as a hobby." Ogden. Phill starred as Harold Hill in The Music Man and portrayed Herbie in Gypsy. Wendy played the title role in Gvpsy and will play the role of Agnes in Do! I Do "One of the reasons the two agreed to come to Utah was for the opportunity to work together," said Seth Reines, director of the musical. "I saw them three years ago in summer stock and was very impressed with their work. I have been trying to get them together where I am working and am pleased to be directing the two of them." The couple in I Do! I Do! goes through all the common place ups and downs of a long satisfactory marriage. It is streaked with troubles and disappointments but is emphatically affirmative. Twenty bouncing songs make up the musical score, including, "My Cup Runneth Over." The book and lyrics are by Tom Jones and the music is by Harvey Schmidt. Both of these men created the Fantasticks, which is the longest running musical of American history. "In Minneapolis, this musical has been so popular that it has been running for the 15 consecutive years with the same cast," Reins said. "The acting couples were married on stage at the 500th performance." The romance lives on as audiences coast to coast respond with great enthusiasm to Do! I Dol Utah can enjoy this duet to a happy marriage beginning July 31 at the Val A. Browning Center for the Performing Arts". There will be only nine performances: July 31-August 2, and August 6-9.
