Show Writing conference held Signpost --Tuesday, July 12, 1988 3 Lloyd Thane Staff Reporter The Fifth Annual Reading and Writing Conference was held at Weber State College Thursday and Friday, July 7 and 8, in the Union Building Ballroom. The conference was held to get the latest information on the teaching of reading and writing to teachers and students in the area. Those who attend the conference are given undergraduate, graduate or baccalaureate college credit. Guests are prominent teachers in the areas of reading and writing, people who otherwise wouldn't be seen by WSC students and people in the area. This year's speakers were Dr. James Rood of San Diego State University and Dr. Elfrieda Hicbert of the University of Colorado at Boulder. Since before the release of the federal report "Becoming a Nation of Readers," the School of Education has been keenly interested in improving the way reading and writing are taught by their graduates. The conference gives participants a chance to hear about new, as well as, traditional methods that may have been forgotten. Dr. Judy Mitchell of teacher education said the conference "increases the enthusiasm of the people who come. These people are the cream of the crop, and they're eager to get even better at what they do. Self-growth of this sort make better teachers." The conference's goal is to improve the experience of children in the classroom, she said. The conference was sponsored by the teacher education department, the School of Education's masters program, the Division of Continuing Education and by several community groups. All of these sponsors "represent an effort of the College to work with private professional organizations and the State Office of Education making the conference possible in light of declining resources," Dr. Mitchell said. mil Deadline for Campus Update; All Information should be taken to room 267 in Ihe Union Building by Monday at noon for Tuesday's paper. Dr. L. Mikel Vause is an instructor that has a contagious enthusiasm for the English language as well as for the great outdoors. Mike, as he prefers to be called, with his medium height, his stocky, athletic build, his openness and his easygoing personality does not fit the 'stuffy' college professor stereotype. His zest for life, his love and serenity with nature and his ability to communicate openly with everyone he comes in contact with make him an interesting person to be around. Mike not only teaches all of the 'Humanity Scries' in the English department, he also teaches courses on wilderness philosophy and mountain climbing. Although Mike excelled in many sports during his high school years, his first love is climbing. When asked how he became interested in mountain climbing, Mike said that when he was young his family shopped in Perkins LTD. There was climbing equipment and pictures of mountain climbers all around the store that sparked his interest. "But," Mike said, "it was the Walt Disney film, 'Third Man on the Mountain' that probably had the greatest influence on me." "Mountain climbing classes didn't exist when I was younger, so I started climbing on my own and with friends," Mike said. Mike has climbed all of the major peaks in the Tetons and would like to climb in Alaska, Mexico, Europe and the Canadian Rockies. "More important than the physical is the psychological freedom to think. The contact with the wilderness gives peace and serenity to the mind," Mike said. "People should dream, then go for it." Mike received his doctorate from Bowling Green, Ohio, in 1986, preceded by a dual Master's degree in American studies and American literature. Mike has been teaching at WSC for the past five years. Prior to that, he spent five years as a social worker for Weber County Mental Health, Division of Family Services, during which time he established and directed high adventure outdoor programs for mentally handicapped youth. He is also a member of the Weber County sheriffs mountain search and rescue team.
