Prince Charming finds the proud and rightful owner of the lost shoe, which belongs to Cinderella (who is played by Stephanie Ross). The play Cinderella opens tonight in the WSC Browning Center. The play is part of the Golden Spike Repertory Theatre's season at Weber State. by Jean Browning Staff Reporter Looking for a great way to spend an . evening besides going to the latest summer movie? Why not take in a play instead. The Golden Spike Repertory Theatre is offering four plays this summer through Weber State College. The classic story of Cinderella opens tonight in the Browning Center. Cinderella will be followed by Side by Side by Sondheim which will open on July 18 and George M which will open on August 1. All three plays will run through the end of August. The company's fourth play, Aesop's Updates: Music and Fables for Our Times" opened in June and will conclude with two afternoon performances this Saturday, July 14. This summer marks the fourth regular season of the Golden Spike Repertory Theatre at Weber State. The company had put on plays at Weber before that, but it wasn't on a regular basis and none of the actors received any compensation. This year the eleven core company members each receive $900 plus room and board for the season. The actors and actresses were chosen for the company through auditions held across the country beginning in January. These regional auditions took place in California, Colorado, New York and Chicago among other places and attracted actors from Massachusetts to Oregon. Most of the actors in the company are fromout-of-state with one local exception being Terry Long, who attends Weber State. The company puts in long hours rehearsing the plays from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The company also hires a number of technical people to design scenery and costumes and set up lighting, as well as a choreographer and directors for the plays. This year's directors include Gary Bird from Utah State, directing Side by Side and George M; Theresa Mitchell, a Masters of Fine Arts candidate at the University of Utah will direct Cinderella; and Edwin Kulp from .California will direct Aesop's Updates, which he also wrote. The theatre has run a full-scale promotion campaign to increase awareness and build their audience according to business manager Mark Peterson. A brochure promoting the plays was mailed to over 10,000 past subscribers. There have also been numerous radio and newspaper ads and articles on the company. While several hundred people buy season tickets in advance, Peterson says most people buy tickets several days before the play they want to attend.Peterson says the theatre does three to four musicals each summer which are chosen a year in advance to find directors and make other preparations. He says the Golden Spike Repertory Theatre wants to become as well known for musicals as Cedar City is for its Shakespearean Festival. People interested in attending one or more of this summer's musicals can buy tickets at the Browning Center box office Monday through Friday from noon to 6 p.m. Ticket prices are $5.50 and $6.50 with all performances at 8 p.m. except this Saturday's matinees of Aesop's Updates. For more information, people can call 626-6433. So try out a different type of summer enjoyment and attend one of the Golden Spike Repertory Theatre's musicals. cLAssifiEd Ads FOR RENT RENT $275.00. 40th and Orchard.
