Show Summer Signpost Thursday, July 12, 1984 5 "Custer" cont'd, from page 3. Dreiser, Admiral Dewey, and even one of Elizabeth Bacon Custer, wife of the ill-fated General Custer. John Lamborn, a member of the Stewart Library special collections area who received the gift for the college, said that many of the signatures are on documents, making them of even greater historical value, and some have accompanying photographs. According to Lamborn, Richard Eugene Roser, originally of Germany, was the person who collected the signatures. In Germany he managed a rare book store where he was able to gather a number of autographs and documents. He traveled to Berlin, Paris, New York, London and San Francisco collecting the documents before settling in Jackson Hole, Wyo. Lamborn said that Roser and Miss Burk met in Jackson Hole and were good friends. Roser came down with meningitis, and before his death, gave the collection to Burk. Lamborn said it would be difficult to put a price tag on the collection, but noted that some of the rarer signatures are valued at approximately $1,000 each. "One thing I'm pleased with is the diversity of the collection," he said. "It covers three centuries of both European and American people and I'm fairly cer- tain it is quite valuable." The collection also includes revolutionary and civil war documents, U.S. presidents' signatures such as Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren, composers and a few inventors. Lamborn said that the autographs will be housed in the special collections area of the Stewart Library and once the documents are properly preserved they will be put on display. "We hope to have displays up by next fall. We have a number of signatures from Victorian authors and we plan to have a series of displays with those names," he said. Lamborn added, "The biggest job right now is just identifying the names."
