Show page 8 signpost sept. 29, 1972 Weber State's Wildcats, fresh from a stunning 26-10 win over favored Idaho lastSaturday, face a crucial showdown tomorrow night at Boise against the Boise State Broncos. The 'Cats currently share the Big Sky Conference lead with Montana University, each school sporting a 1-0 mark. However, Montana's win follows two lopsided losses to non-conference foes. Thus, the Grizzlies have taken on an unpredictable look thus far in the early season. On the other hand, Boise State has been impressive in posting two non-conference victories, and the Broncos are currently ranked sixth among the nation's small college teams. Tomorrow's contest marks the opening of the Broncs BSC grid campaign.Boise State, which nabbed a 32-28 win over Chico State in last year's Camillia Bowl, has the depth and experience this season to improve over last year's sparkling 10-2 overall record. The Broncos will be hard pressed to replace Eric Guthrie, who graduated, at quarterback; but they will be out to avenge Military Service? serve as a WOMAN MARINE OFFICER JUNIORS-SENIORS O Training and pay of $720 for 8 weeks during summer O Options of $100 per month while in college FREE 40 hours civilian pilot training during senior year e Commissoion as a 2nd Lt. upon graduation from college o Starting salaries from $700-$! 000 per month Obligation: 2Vi years upon commissioning Military Service? serve as a MARINE OFFICER FRESHMEN-SOPHOMORES-JUNIORS: The Platoon Leaders Class (pilot ground or law) offers to eligible students: Immediate draft deferment O Training and pay of $540 for 6 weeks during summer O All training during summer months O Options of $100 per month while in college FREE 40 hours-civilian pilot training during senior year e Commission as a 2nd Lt. upon graduation from college O Starting salaries from $700-$1000 per month Obligation: 2Vi years for ground officers and 3V2 years after flight training for pilots TALK TO THE MARINE CORPS OFFICER COMING ON CAMPUS DATE: 2 & 3 OCT. 1972 TIME: 0930 - 0230 PLACE: STUDENT UNION last year's 20-7 loss to Weber State. Weber, which spotted the Vandals a 10-6 lead at halftime last week, hopes to get its offense in high gear for the Boise encounter. The 'Cat defense, which was somewhat of a question mark before last week, appears to be jelling fast. The big "D" picked off two second-half interceptions and returned them for touchdowns last week, as well as recovering a fumble, which led to another Weber score. Itallpoints to a very interesting and crucial matchup tomorrow at Boise, with the Big Sky Conference Championship hanging very much in the balance. Of course, the Wildcats and Broncos do not form the entire Big Sky lineup. Along with those unpredictable Montana Grizzlies and the highly touted Idaho Vandals, three other teams will be shooting for the Big Sky title. The Montana State Bobcats, who will be running a new offense, hope to improve on last season's poor 2-7-1 mark. The Bobcats currently stand at 1-2 in non-conference play but are not considered serious challengers for all of the Big Skymarbles. The Lumberjacks ofNorthern Arizona University are out to better their 5-5 slate of last season, and the 'Jacks will also be gunning to avenge a 23-7 loss to Weber in 1971. Northern Arizona was bombed by Montana, 40-17 last week in their conference opener and they stand at 1-2 overall. Idaho State University starts its 1972 grid campaign with a new head coach and many new faces. The Bengals have not fared well thus far, losing two non-conference contests by lopsided margins. Idaho State will be hard pressed to match last season's final 6-4 record. Thus, it looks like a long, hard trail to the Big Sky grid title and possible post-season bowl bids for Weber State's Wildcats. That trail could be shor--tened a great deal with a big win over Boise State tomorrow night. wsc ranks number 0 in passing The Wildcats have proven to be one of the most potent offen-. . sive football teams in the country . According to a survey of university and college division teams conducted by the University of Delaware, Weber State ranks 8th in passing with an average of 188.9 yards per game. The Wildcats were listed as 11th among university and college division football teams in total offense. The statistics came from every college in the nation, each of which submitted statistics for its best four-year-period in recent years. Weber took the college division total offense title in 1966 with an average of 460.1 per game. Last year's potent offense derived from the new wishbone formation pushed the Wildcats into third place in rushing among college division teams. Several highly rated running backs have been recruited from the junior college and freshman ranks to join forces with the returning players. READSNG...KEY TO KNOWLEDGE - j"V " i , ' s ' t . (Photo by john shupe) There's a lot at stake this Saturday in Boise. Not only is the Big Sky Conference grid lead up for grabs, but the eventual conference championship could very well be on the line. And of course, the Big Sky champion has a fine chance of receiving a bid or two to one of the many post-season bowl games. Well, it becomes evident that tomorrow's Weber State -- Boise State clash boils downs to much more than a mere football game. Oh, it will be at least that if nothing else, but both squads will certainly be gunning for the fringe benefits as well. The 'Cat coaching staff is hoping for an improved performance from the Weber offensive unit, particularly at the quarterback position, in the 7:30 p.m. encounter. Weber State's defense, which came up with several big plays to ice last week's big win over Idaho, will be hard pressed to contain the potent Bronco offensive attack. The Bronco defense is reportedly big and tough. If Weber's offense is not well tuned, it could be a long, long night in the 'Cat scoring column. Tickets for the Boise State game are on sale at the Weber State ticket office for $5.00 apiece. All Weber students, faculty and supporters are encouraged to venture up to Boise and root for the Wildcats in this very crucial, early season contest.
