Cyclists Prepare for 100-Mile Race Cyclists from Provo, Ogden and Salt Lake City will be competing for the state road championships Saturday in a 100 mile race sponsored by the Amatuer Bicycling League. FULL COURSE DINNER S2.54 inc. tax & tip ' Phone 773-0963 Alan Miller of the Wasatch Wheelmen, Ogden, said winners will qualify for the national finals at Portland, Oregon on August 12. Some 7 entrants will compete in the senior division including Bill Young, 36, of Salt Lake City; Tom Gridley, 23, of Provo: and Miller, 26, of Ogden. Gridley has won three and Miller has won one of the four Utah races this year. Miller entered two of the four races, taking second place in both events. Junior division cyclists, ages 17 and younger, will also compete Saturday. They will race from Wellsville to Ogden, completing a total of 50 miles. Starting time for the senior division race was 7 a.m. Miller said the race should take four or five hours, depending on road and weather conditions. Pre'-race favorite is Gridley, although Miller has been slowing eliminating the minutes between the two racers. Both men have been practicing for 2 or more hours each day, mostly in mountainous country. Gridley is from Idaho Falls, Idaho, attending Brigham Young University. He classified himself as a "mountain cycling man." An internationally known skier, Miller said he "prefers the flat-lands but also enjoys mountain racing." Commissioner Maurice Richards, said the county would pay $135 of the $2,235 needed for operation of the program. Weber State College, sponsor of the program, would pay $500, and incorporated communities would share thes rest of the cost, he said. "If the course would save thou-sandsof dollars in traffic losses and also would save lives, it would be effective." he said. Hershel G.
