Other Pioneer Day Celebration chairmen are: Mark Darney, general chairman; Bruce McFarland, purchasing agent; and Keith Hunt, special events. They have coordinated celebration activities which were started last Saturday with the Junior Pos-see Jamboree. Mt. Ogden Junior Possee won the jamborees, compiling the best scores in barrel racing, pole bending, water, ribbong and lead races. Some 12 junior possees entered the jamboree. Barrel team members are also competing nightly in the rodeo for a top team trophy. Nightly winners include the West Weber Wranglers. A special pre-rodeo was held last Monday for crippled persons and shut-ins with defense night held Thursday for Hill Air Force Base and Ogden Defense Depot Personnel. Teams from HAFB and the Depot have been competing in the "wild cow scramble" since Tuesday with the Defense Depot currently in first place. The object of the scramble is to catch a wild long-horn Texas cow, hold her and milk her. It sound easy - - but many a man has arms that are a few feet longer now from being drug from one end of the stadium to the other by a cow that just wouldn't stop running. Other special events of the rodeo include the Ponys of America chariot races; braham bull chariot race; senior possee precision drill; speciality acts by rodeo clowns Frank Curry and Gene and Bobby Clark; and a special saga entitled the "Way of the West." This saga portrays the history of the cowboy from past to present including the era of the longhorn Texas steer, stagecoach driving and cattle rustling by red-scarged bandits. The portrayl includes a genuine vigilante lynch mob and hanging in the center of the arena, as the good guys win over the bad guys in the fight for law and order on the western frontier. The "Way of the West" is a new addition to the rodeo this year, presented by the Flying "U" Ranch from Marysville, California, "Pioneer Days" rodeo producers. Cotton Rosser, owner of the1 ranch and stock, is in Ogden to supervise activities. During Wednesday night's rodeo, Rosser was knocked from his horse when two wild bucking broncs collided, with Rosser's horse in the middle. The veteran cowboy was not injured in the mishap, but cheerfully climbed back on his horse. Rosser is now 38 years old with a career that already spans 20 years in the arena sport. He began as a college cowboy, leading the California Polytechnic College at San Lusis Obispo STREBEL & SONS O Levis, Lee, Wranglers O Shirts O Boots O Hats Golf City New supply for the rodeo season.
