Idaho gained the lead eight minutes later when Nick Yorges scored from the Wildcat 14 to make it 30-26. After a Weber fumble, IS clinched the game and the Big Sky crown when Ted Schmidt scored from the Weber 30. Weber Draws First Blood The Wildcats drew first blood late in the first period on a quarterback sneak from the six by Lynn Smith. His PAT was good and Weber led 7-0. In the second quarter, Terry Van Fleet pounced on a Bengal fumble at the IS 28, and Lynn Corbridge caught a Smith aerial on the nine yard line. JUIiXgM SIDELINES -17 Coach Wally Nalder's football team closes its season Saturday against the Mountaineers of Western State College from Gunnison, Colorado. Coach Kay Dalton has led the Mountaineers into the top 20 ratings of the small colleges. The Mountaineers strike with the same offense as Idaho State used last week, the winged T. Western State leads the Eocky Mountain Conference with a 4-0 record and have their best team in many years. Coach Nalder and his staff have done a wonderful job this year as they have compiled a 6-2 record this far. The Wildcats' 1-2 Big Sky record puts them in a tie with Montana State for second place. A victory over Idaho State would have given Weber a tie for the Big Sky title. There are several Wildcats that should gain all-conference honors for their performances this year. Big Sky offensive leader, Lynn Smith is a good bet forall-conference honors. He leads in two departments, passing and total offense. One of his favorite targets, Lynn Corbidge, has turned in many honorable performances this year. Several Wildcat running backs should be considered, Frank Bentley and Frank Kaaa, to mention two. In the line, Eon Trussel has been great, and guards Gary Hansen and Lynn Foxley have gotten the job done. Defensive specialist, L y 1 e Johnston has been brilliant on defense (lately he has been used on defense) and as the team punter. Bentley clawed forward to the six and on the next play scored to end the Wildcats' scoring at 26. Then the Bengals came alive and Shaw and Yorges teamed together for a two-point conversion after Yorges had scored from 23 yards out for the TD. The Bengals continued their scoring ways in the last quarter as they downed the Wildcats, 36-26. Wildcats Lose Vilker By Mike Sivulich A few weeks ago Weber State College lost a great football player.Curtis Wilker, after much thought, decided to "throw in the towel." He ended his football career as a result of a recent head injury suffered during a practice session. He has a histoi'y of concussions and other difficulties that have marred his college football career. During his freshman year he received a concussion which prevented his playing for several days. Shortly after the season had begun, in his sophomore year, he had an appendectomy. The operation kept him from playing football for the rest of that season. Last season, during the Eastern Oregon game, he was knocked "silly" on the opening kickoff. For a few days he was confused as to who second Wildcat to finish when he crossed the line in 13th spot. Jack Spainhower was four places behind Parker. Wayne Smith came in 22nd and Stewart Foster was 27th. had pitched the game. He thought it was a baseball game that had been played. And now, his junior year in eligibility and probably the greatest year of his career, he received another concussion. Before the latter injury he was the team's second leading rusher, third in scoring, third in pass receiving, first in punt returns, and first in kickoff returns. He was the fastest man on the team, a good breakaway runner, a good pass receiver, and an all-around player. Curt comes from Grace, Idaho, a small town well known for its many athletes. While at Grace High School he won three letters in football and basketball and four letters in track. He was the vice president of his freshman class and president of the Letter-men's Club during his senior year. His future plans are to continue in chemical engineering and to work towards a Master's Degree. He felt that his education meant more to him than the possibility of permanently damaging his brain playing football. n We stress finest quality food Fastest service i HAWKINS, jM BED BEES DRIVE MS, 1 j , JUMBO BURGERS i I WE SERVE ONLY THE BEST 1 1 Jumbo Hamburgers Tacos and Taco Burgers 9 later Gems Fish and Chips 9 Thick Shakes and Malts Full Flavor Fountain ON HI WAY 91 IN CLEARFIELD |
