Mi Is " Champion Cyclist Answers Common Questions About Bike Touring, Races Cyclist Alan Miller won the state road championship and a berth in the national finals last Saturday in a 100-mile competitive race. A Ian Miller Sweeps State Championship Cyclist Alan Miller of the Wasatch Wheelmen outsped eight competitors last Saturday to win the state road championship and a berth in the national bicycling finals.Miller, 26, beat Tom Gridley, 23, of Provo, by a slim 3 second margin, with a time of 4 hours, 14 minutes and 36 seconds for the 100 mile race. A Pre-race favorite, Gridley finished the race in 4 hours, 14 minutes and 39 seconds. He had won three of the four preliminary races this year. Other senior division winners were Per Evansen, 27, of Ogden, 4:23:52 and Bill Young, 36, of Salt Lake City, last year's champion, 4:24:19. The cyclists raced from Ogden to Logan, through Sardine Canyon to Honeyville and then returned through Brigham City to Ogden. National finals will be held in Portland, Oregon on August 12. New state junior division champion is Lou Bingham, 15, of Ogden, who raced 50 miles from Wells-ville to Ogden in 2 hours and 49 minutes. Close on his heels was Mike McConvill, 16, of Ogden, with 2:51, followed by Rick Matthies, 17, 3:09. Both senior and iunior division racers will compete Saturday in a 60 mile race from Brigham City through Sardine Canyon. Some six cyclists are expected to enter including Miller, Evansen, and David Pratt in the senior division; and Bingham, McConvill, Matthies and Kelly Kidman in the junior division. The race will begin at 9:30 a.m. in Brigham City. by Alan Miller 1. What kind of bicycle should I buy and what kind of equipment should I have? For most people, the ideal bike is a 10 speed with Alpine gear ratios. Also, a racing bike design is the most comfortable to ride. In the $80-100 range, you can get a French bike that is very light in weight, with 10 speed alpine gears in your correct size frame. All these points make cycling a pleasure. 2. Is there a cycling club in Ogden? Yes, the "Wasatch Wheelmen." We tour from Lester Park, 24th and Monroe, each Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. and we meet on the first Thursday of each month to plan activities and to watch movies. Call 393-8374 for information. Junior division fees are $3 and senior division fees are $4. And the club is affiliated with the Amateur Bicycle League of America. 3. Are there any cycling races? Yes, senior division, age 18 and older, and junior division, age 17 and younger. Races are usually 30-60 miles long and are very exciting. One of the biggest sports in Europe is cycling and .racing. It is also a good spectator sport. 4. Is bicycling a good over-all exercise? Bike riding is rated among the three best over-all exercises, ranking with swimming and running. And you don't get overdeveloped leg muscles from normal riding - - just strong legs. 5. How many miles, on an average, could you travel in an hour, just biking around the city? About 15 miles without much effort. In last week's 100 mile race, competitors averaged 24 miles an hour and covered the distance in about 4 hours and 14 minutes. 6. Where are some good places to cycle? Pine View Reservoir, North Ogden, Weber State College to the Old Post Road and on to Weber Canyon. AU around Ogden is good as long as you have a wide gear ratio since we do have quite a few hills. 7. Is bicycling a lot of hard work?
