One-BS Weber State College won one, and lost one in Big Sky basketball battles over the weekend. Both of the Wildcat games were played on the road up in the northern end of Big Sky territory. The Wildcats beat the University of Idaho 106-103, in an overtime thriller on the Vandal floor. On Monday night Weber played the '"Zippy-Zags" of Gon-zaga in Spokane and lost their chance to wrap up the Big Sky championship 77-68. In the Idaho game it was Steady Eddie Tillman who turned up as the hero. He stole a Vandal pass with 15 seconds left in the game, dribbled the entire length of the floor and stuffed the ball to tie the game at 94-94. For an encore Tillman grabbed the ball again just as it seemed the Idahoans were driving for the winning basket. His steal gave Weber a last ditch chance to win in regulation time but the "Cats" didn't respond and the game went into overtime. In the overtime period Frank Hitchens hit two quick baskets, John Silbernagel tanked a turnaround jumper and Bob Belka slipped in a four shot to give Weber a 101-94 lead. But Idaho fought back quickly on counters by Tom Moreland and Chuck Kozak, plus two foul shots by Jerry Skaife. This put the Vandals within two at 102- 104. The final scoring came on two free-throws by Weber's Silbernagel, and . a single charity toss by Kozak for the Vandals. Thus the final score, 106-106. With nine minutes left to play in the game, Weber had established a sixteen point lead, (80-64) but the "Cats" must have gone on vacation after that. When they again took notice their sixteen point lead had dwindled to only seven points and there were only four minutes left. With Wicks and Skaife bombing the strings, the Vandals finally caught up with two minutes left, and took the lead at 94-9;?,. Then Tillman went to work and you know the rest. Silbernagel led the Weber crew with 25 points, Harrop added 22, Belka 17 and Tillman 15. Har-ron suffered a sprained ankle I near the end of regulation play ! and had to sit out the overtime period. Ha w a s , able to play against Gonzaga thanks to Idaho trainer who doctored the injured ankle immediately after it happened. The victory on Saturday gave the Wildcats a 7-1 BSAC mark and set the stage for the crucial Monday night game against Gonzaga. If the Cats would have won last Monday they could have brought the championship home with them, but Gonzaga's Bulldogs had different ideas. The Bulldogs, off some fine shooting, and tough defense upset the favored Wildcats 77-63, and set up the championship game which Was played last night. Going into last night's game, Weber led Gonzaga by one-half game in Big Sky play. Gonzaga was sparked by the shooting of Gary Lechman who wound up as top scorer in the contest. Lechman is also the current leader in t h e conference points-per-game standings. Monday just wasn't Weber's night as the Cats turned the ball over to the Bulldogs nine times on offensive fouls and bad passes. Weber had been averaging 56 rebounds a game but was out-rebounded by Gonzaga 50-37. The Wildcats and the Bulldogs met to decide the BSAC basketball championship last night here in the Weber gymnasium. The Wildcats were able to concentrate solely on the task at hand last evening, as the pressure ol a possible NCAA tournament berth was off. The last at large berth for NCAA play was given to Notre Dame last Monday.
