Hints for Girls red By Carol Desgan Associate Editor Football, beloved by almost every American male, is still a baffling game to the confused female who must sit at his side through what seems to her to be a milenium of football games. He, so involved in the game, is too absorbed to explain even the most basic rules to her. She, in fact, doesn't dare breath a word during the entire game except to chorus his exclamations of "eat 'em raw" and "that a boy, Smith." The fcotball season is three months long. So what does the average girl do when her favorite boyfriend starts showing signs of football-itis She ca.n either i A find herself a boy who doesn't like to watch football, or she can .Bi learn to enjoy the game. Now if the average girl chooses selection A she'll probably be a very lonely girl. Football and the American boy go along with apple pie and Sark Awards To Outstanding Footballers Coach Sarkas Arslanian, although disappointed about the outcome of the contest, applauded the efforts of several players in the San Diego game last week. Tim Jones was tabbed as the best offensive player of the week by the coach. Jones threw two touchdown passes and gained 252 yards through the air in a 38-34 losing cause. Tops defensively, according to the coach, were Mose Watkins and Mitch Gainer, who suffered a hairline fracture in his leg. Gainer, an All-Big Sky defensive back, will be out of action for five or six weeks. Several other members of the squad received helmet stars for their performances in the game. Henry Owens received two stars for scoring twice as did wingback Phil Tuckett. One star each went to Joe Blockovich, Lee White, Jim Mann, Bill Schmidt and Ron McCall. EBy Footba ? mother. If, -on the other hand, she chooses selection iB), the' average girl could become the most popular girl in the stands. So the problem now arises: how does the average girl find happiness watching a football game? Strategy 1: Buy yourself a simply killing outfit. If you can distract him by looking pretty maybe you won't have to watch the game. Maybe you'll spend the entire time staring into his big, brown eyes. Strategy 2: Now let's suppose that you're wearing that very killing outfit all the other boys are starring at you, but your one and only still has his iittle beady eyes in the direction of the playing field. Instead of complaining about his lack of attention, try whispering a few of these sentences in his ear: 1. Darling, did you know that the first game of football was played on November 6, 1869, between Rutgers and Princeton, Helmet Stars with Rutgers winning by a score of six goals to four? 2. And sweetheart, did you know that each side had 25 players, that the ball was round, and that the game was witnessed by only 100 spectators?3. And here's the killer, sweetheart. It is also reliably reported that there was a dog on the field during a good part of the r??.me. How about that, lamby? If, by that time, he hasn't said to you. "I didn't know that you knew so much about football? ". . . if he hasn't i;azed into your eyes in utter amazement . . . then resolve yourself to passing him the pop corn and putting catsup on his hotdog. He's an A-l, dedicated fan. Do the crossword puzzle at the back of the program until the game's over, or strike up a conversation with that darling boy who keeps looking your way. Maybe he wouldn't mind explaining the game of football to a poor, innocent girl who doesn't know an end from a quarterback. Then you can leave your old boyfriend with his hot dog and his popcorn and have your own season with a brand new player. i V V r-- Tim Jones . . .
