Show March 16, 1965 Search and Rescue Page 11 Whats This? Green Giants Shamrocks, and Parades!! By Rick Hassett It sure is a strange day. March 17, that is. Everyone wears green on that day, pinching seems to be the accepted thing to do, and everyone from the Japanese to the French becomes an Irishman for a day. What, my friends, is the reason for such odd occurences in the middle of the windy month? Why, St. Patrick's Day, of course, And who was St. Patrick? you ask. You've got me there. Well, not really, because I wouldn't be writing this article if I didn't know who St. Patrick was. Now, let me see. St. Patrick (it does sound quite Irish, doesn't it?) was the patron saint of Ireland. You know, the magic isle the one next to England. St. Patrick is often credited with driving all of the snakes out of Ireland. Another legend of St Patrick's Day is the shamrock. (That reminds me, I've got to get some gas after school.) The shamrock, you see, was supposedly used by St. Patrick to illustrate the idea of the trinity, or Godhead. So now you know why we all wear shamrocks on March 17. You don't? Well, it's like this, Since the colonial days (and colonial nights for that matter, too) we have celebrated the death of St. Patrick, who died on March 17, 493 over there in Ireland. (Where else?) And since St. Patrick was fond of shamrocks, or three leaf clovers, we wear them on the anniversay of his death. Clever, huh? The celebration did not become official nationwide in the United States, however, until 1855. Surely twas "a great day for the Irish" On the Light Side Navy fighter pilots training on Oahu during World War II were ordered not to swim in a certain cove where the surf crashed dangerously against a steep sand beach. But, being young and, in their own opinion, indestructible, some of the men swam there anyhow. One was thrown against the sand and dislocated his shoulder. More serious tli an the injury was the problem of how he should reply to "Cause of Injury" in the required report, without disclosing that he had disobeyed orders. With a flash of genius, he wrote: "Tos-ised by a WAVE." No disciplinary action was taken. From the Reader's Digest Wed.-Thur.-FH. March 17-18-19 WSC BOOKSTORE "Everything for the College Student" SELL YOUR me lads. Like Christmas, St. Patrick's Day has undergone considerable commercialization. St. Patrick's Day? "Bah, humbug!" Merchants seD special clothes, flowers, shamrocks, and greeting cards on this great occasion. Greeting cards? That's a new one on me. I'll bet the police in New York get a. lot of those. They also have a big parade in New York on St. Patrick's Day, but unfortunately last year city officials would not allow the center line of the street to be painted green. (Party poops). Preparations begin on the parade shortly after New Year's. Aren't you lucky? Just think, who else knows that much about good old St. Patrick's Day? Not even the little green men, I'll bet, I'll bet, I'll bet. You remember, the ones with leprosy. Shucks, where else could they get such a funny name as le-prochauns?I have to finish my story now because we go to press in an hour and my editor is sitting on the edge of his desk twit-tling has thumbs and starring at me with those sneaky eyes. You should see the cute little slippers he has on. They have the pointed toes with bells on the end, and get a load of that beard. Uh-oh. Don't speak now, but I think he might be one of those . . .jolly green giants. KTava What's wrong with these Post-Grad Slacks?
