Show March 16, 1965 SIGNPOST rage 10 SAG -an by Rick Hassert Weher Suite's Wildcats, as is the tradition in March werehigh-t-r than kites last Thursday night as they soared over Gonzaga University, fi(i-(i7, to pocket their first Big Sky basketball tille. The flamboyant Cats, who were more elusive than the wind itself, closed their campaign with tin 8-2 conference record and a flossy 22-3 showing for the season Weber's best mark as a four-year school. A record fieklhouse crowd of 4552 and several thousand tele-vison viewers watched Weber's fast breaking express go on a second half scoring binge to notch the championship win. Tho first few minutes of the game were rough and tumble for the Cats. Tlie score was tied four times, with the lead changing hands at six different intervals. An obviously high-strung and nervous Weber squad turned the ball over to Gonzaga on several occasions with erratic passes. The Wildcats were down by 13-12 when Jerry Trice twisted itno their air on a beautiful jump and rifled the pill into the net to give WSC the lead. The rest of the Wildcats took the cue and put on a dazzling performance of court magic to enter the dressing room at halftime with a 37-24 margin. Gene Visscher, who poured 19 points through the hoop, also displayed his great defensive skill by bottling up Gonzaga's Gary Lechman. Lechman, who leads the Big Sky offensive list, was held to only 11 points. The second stanza was all Weber's. The Wildcats worked well off the boards, ending with '17 rebounds to 37 for the Bulldogs. The- Purple and White lost a crucial game at Spokane earlier in the week because of rebound ing but Thursday was a night for revenge. The glimmer and shimmer of Weber State's powerful offensive machine was highlighted by sterling performances from the Wildcat "jet-set" Trice, Greg Har-rop, and Eddie Tillman. Trice, who played at the same high school in Indianapolis that Oscar Robertson played for, split the strings with 24 tallies. Harrop, maneuvering on a weak ankle injured in the Idaho game, made the nets sing with four fielders and six our of seven from the fould line. And Tillman "Big T" to the fans hauled down rebound after rebound, growling with a tiger-ish show underneath. He wound up with 17 points for the night John Silbernagle, the gangly red head from Monterey Park, Calif., who is the only senior on the club, played his last game for the Wildcats. Unfortunately he sat out most of the action because of foul trouble. Silbernagle, who led Weber's scoring in the previous three games on the road, was presented a hoop bent in the pre-game warmup as a memento of the Ogden school. U. of Idaho Vandals Cop Big Sky Sv, immma Honors The University of Idaho Vandals successfully defended their Big Sky Conference swimming title Friday and Saturday with a 149-119 win over the arch-rival Idaho State University squad, that finished second. Weber State finished third with 84 and host Montana State University had 47. Although Idaho placed only five first-place winners in the 17 event to ISU's 8, the Vandals were second eight times and third in five events. Idaho State had six seconds but no thirds. Weber Stale collected a single championship and was third nine times. Montana had three win- Gonzaga's top shooters were John Brodsky, who bucketed 25 mostly from outside, and Bill Sut-er, a flashy midget according to basketball standards, who notched 18 points on the visitor's side of the scoreboard. Coach Dick Motta, who ran his record at WSC to 10 victories against 32 lasses, will probably be voted as the Big Sky Conference coach of the year. Under Motta's guidance, the Purple and White have become a major college basketball power. Dial A Date With the Valley's Heartbeat 1430 on your dial V v Cn X' - KLO First in Music-News ners.
