Show Page 2 SIGNPOST DECEMBER 8, 1961 Have We lost The Meaning of Christmas? "Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, good will toward men." This was the promise given of angels unto men at Christ's birth- He came forth and taught the Gospel of love. He laid the path to happiness, joy and peace. The closest that men ever come to walking this path is during the celebration of this great promise. Christmas is the time of sharing and givng. The aroma of pine trees and baking goodies awaken men's senses and they again begin to experience the world around them, laughter unites red cheeked families as they roll snowmen on the lawn. This love and sharing is the spirit of Christmas. This is the spirit of Christ's Gospel of love. Yet, often we hear people mutter "I'm glad Christmas comes only once a year" Christmas is fast becoming a mechanical part of modern life. Christmas lists are maide up like grocery lists, Shopping is a necessity that people, dread. Santa Claus has lost his symbolism and become a re warder of deeds. The Christmas Spirit is slowly being crushed under commercialization and the celebration is becoming Xmas. Let us not loose1 this time of smiles and renewed friend-ships.Let us not loose the one time of year that we can find a small part of this peace on earth, good will toward men. Let's put the spirit of Christ's Gospel of love back into Christmas. Understand what each part of the Christmas celebration sympolizes- Share experiences with friends and give love. A portion of thyself is the greatest gift that can be given. All we need to do is remove the commercilal-ization to revive this Christmas Spirit. For Christ promised "And lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world." Wise Men Visit For The Holidays Have you seen the newest addition to the Christmas decorations in the Union Building? Three newcomers are visiting for the holidays.. They are the Three Wise Men (contemporary style) . How did they arrive at Weber? The Union Building Ant Committee created and painted them into the stained glass window on the main stairway of the U.B. A subtitle for this window might be "Have You Ever Tried Sleeping on a Camel?" , , Artists Lynda Kay Swenson and Ruth Westerguard are the chief engineers and artists of the Wise Men. The rest of ;the Art Committee is working with the Literary Committee on panels presenting Christmas customs in foreign lands. These panels will be displayed where a)rt exhibits are 'usually hung. The collection of Christmas Cards from around the world displayed on the Browsing Library window is (another project of the Literary Committee. Specialists Oont. From Page 1 Ool. 3 and replace those who will die or retire. The need remains whether there is a cold war or not. The growth of peacetime technology and the approach of .automation in many areas requires greater numbers of trained men regardless of the space race and threats of wars. Sad Note One sad note is that an adequate number of engineers is graduated each year, but many of them go into teaching or nonscientific jobs. In order to keep up with themselves, Americans must create an interest in these scientific fields that is great enough to keep the experts at their jobs. Christmas makes you feel so wonderful, it may bring parties and thoughts devotional; but to the merchants, Christmas means one tiding, Money (that's yenom spelled backwards.) Those devilish sellers can think of a thousand and one ways to part you with your green stuff. A typical day in the life of an average American shopper from November 28 to December 24 goes about like this. He is awakened by the soft strains of Silent Night from his clock radio. But then he is reminded that the Silent Night is made possible by Armstrong's so- rn'ilprsof ceiling tile. The man of the house shaves, remembering those Wonderful Gillette's Super Gold-plated Diamond Engraved Shavers for only $9.95. After all. What money earned ever hurt anybody?Santa Claus? Fine, if he's either drinking or bringing or eating their products. Friends? Great especially ,to give their products too for Christmas. Family? The most, always a good place to unload cartons of merchandise. Religious Signifigance? That's okay, if Christmas Carols can be sung in the commercials, for propogan-da. Here's a little Carol for Merchants to sing during the holiday season. C is for the many commercials you give us. H is for the HOLLY we unload. R is for the Ked we use in ads, yeah. I is for the fake Ice and snow we sell. S is for the many Santas we pay T is for the Take we get right now. 31 is for the Many who get taken. A is for the angles that we oaok up. S is for the Sweets they really buy. Put them all together they spell Christmas, That's the only way us merchants make our dough. He is the most awesome and treacherous mass slayer in history. The killer's name? Traffic Accident.
