J i i ! : U if K Tf 7 V Leaping Jim Lyon drops another basket for the Wildcats in the Nazarene College Tournament. The basketball team handed Weber a bright wreath of wins with one painful thorn to sum up a game filled holiday season. The first of the impressive wins was over the giant Idaho State 81-73. Weber entered the game as underdogs and proved that they were anything but as they led the Bengals more than their share. The game was tied 10 times including the time marked 00:00 by the wall clock. Weber went into a stall with 3 and a half minutes left only to have the ball stolen twice and successfully converted into paying points. Then with 44 seconds, Weber played for the winning basket but failed, and the Idahoans called time out with 3 seconds. Their attempt to score failed, and the game went in to over time. The Cats cut lose to win the game in the overtime by 81-73. Both Jim Lyon, who put through 22 points worth, and Idaho Crump, who led scoring with 35 points, were called out on fouls in the overtime. Lewis pulled in the honors for the Wildcats with 24 points. Cats Lay For Gonzaga With Idaho's scalp tight under Motta's belt, the confident Cats went after Gonzaga and handed them a 98-82 type pill to swallow-It was hard on the Gonzaga team since they were already on a losing streak. Weber played some smooth controlled ball with teamwork showing up all over the court as is evident in the scoring distribution. Jim Lyon led with 30, Bob Lewis added 20 as did Doug Powell, while the amazing ball hawk Sivulich put in his dozen. It was the fast breaks that turned the trick against Gonzaga. Montana Fall The Big Cats continued to run their winning streak up as they downed the Western Montana Team at Dillon 83-73. The Weber team wasn't as polished as it had been, but the 43 success from the field boosted the score to a winning margin for the Utahn's. Weber's lead was threatened several times as the Cagers found themselves trying to fast break on a small floor. It was Lyon once again leading the scoring parade with 27 points. All of Coach Motta's starters scored in the double figures as did the Montana five. Trophy Captured Dec. 28th the Wildcats unleashed themselves on the Naza-rine College tournament and brought the whole pie home by taking Central Washington College 83-67 and Eastern Oregon 91-68. . Weber played a warm first half and led the CW-C team at the half 43-34- In the second half the cooling process began, and the lead was handed back and forth 11 times. With four minutes left, Weber led by 4 points and then proceeded to put it on ice. Lyon pulled in 35, Sivulich 19. Dave Erickson hit 11. The Eastern Oregon five fell before the Cats in awe while a 91-68 score was being racked up against them After trailing by 9 the first half, the Oregon team was never in the game. All of the Wildcats saw action except Bob Lewis who missed connections in the heavy holiday traffic. Lyon led the team with 21 G.ene Young was good for 17, Dave Ericson 15 and Doug Powell 11. Parsons Slaughtered Probably the most merciless game of the season was played the 2nd of Jan. when the Parsons of Westminster ' tried their tricks to stop the winning spree of the now feared Wildcats. The Parsons lost 99-56 in a contest where the greatest thrills came from Weber's battle against the score board clock in an effort to reach the 100 mark, (almost). True to form and habit, Jim Lyon played 28 minutes to plunk in 32 points. Parker Jenkins hit enough to add 18, and the sparkling Mike Sivulich hit 13. Doug By Ron Connors As the current basketball season progresses, so progresses the highly-touted team that represents Weber College. This powerful unit currently sports a record of 10 wins and 2 loses. Although their success is due to the efforts of a team as a whole, the efforts of Jim Lyon cannot be overlooked. Jim graduated in 1957 from Flora High School, in Flora Indiana. In the fall of 1957 he enrolled at Citrus Junior College in A z u s a, Calif. On the completion of his freshman year, he enlisted in the Army where he played two years of ball for the 25th Division. His success there was recognized when he was voted the most valuable player both years. In 1961 he again enrolled at Citrus where he was chosen on the Calif. All-State Team. He then paced his team to second place in the State Tournament which is comparable to the National Junior College Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas. Following the finals of tha tournament, he was selected on the All-Tournament Team along with players the caliber of ' Troy Collier, first team center for Ltah State University. x Jim has demonstrated to the public his variety of shots, his ability to rebound, passes that sometimes deceive his own teammates, and an effective defense that helps cripple the opposition. His all around team pertormance has promoted Coach Motta to tab Jim Lyon as "the finest basketball player in the state" Powell was a double figure man with 11. Idaho College? The Deseret News of Salt Lake City expressed what most students felt when they asked for tougher competition for Weber College. The College of . Idaho Cyotes heard the plea and handed Weber their first loss since that ill fated night in Reno. The Coyotes squeaked by the Cats 75-74- Weber was never behind until the final 2 minutes and led 74-71 with one minute left- A quick two baskets put the Idaho five in front-Weper called time with 2 seconds, but the attempt was just shy as the ball rimmed out of the basket. The scoring went to Lyon, Sivulich and Ericson with 23, 14 and 10 points respectively. The Weber College Wildcats still looked good in spite of the unexpected loss and will continue to dominate the independents. |
