Show Page 4 SIGNPOST JANUARY 12, 1962 Weber top Standings Weekend Gomes Listed Weber College, defending ICAC basketball champs, have twice successfully defended their position thus far. Traveling to Dixie College and CSU last Friday and Saturday respectively proved worthwhile. Rebels Downed 73-61 A hopeful crew of Dixie Rebels met with a determined Weber quinltet and saw their hopes vanish as tine Cats stuffed 73 points through the hoop. Dixie hit for 61 counters. Highly respected Ken Black of the Dixie crew was wrapped-up like a mummy and managed only a pair of free throws. However, the sharp shooting of Dave Erick-son was not halted. He tanked 25 points and claimed floor scoring honors. Good Scoring Weber was Well represented in the scoring columns as a talented quartet, comprised of Thomas, Trice, Garret, and Conger, all hit in the double figures to conduct a convincing "Symphony of Victory". Thomas topped Weber scoring with 22 points. The following night CSU suffered a loss at the hands of fast- moving Weber College. They were stopped 75-65. New Hero Bruce Wilson, 6-8 center, was the hero of the evening as he provided the Cats with a small margin lead throughout the first half and scored 20 points. Trice also gathered 20 points. The thwarted Thunderbirds afforded Weber top standings after the first weekend of action. U of U Frosh and Boise Game Scheduled An interesting game is scheduled for tonight iat the Ben Lomond High School Gymnasium where the Cats will try out a solid XJ. of U. Frosh team. This non-league .encounter will be followed by what promises to be an 'exciting league game against Boise on Saturday night. This game will be played at the Bonneville gym. Boise has what is considered its best team in five years. esire Is lley To Success A successful basketball team is usually considered to be a team which spoils a high win and low loss record at the end of a basketball season. However, there are many factors which determine the games' results. Talent Needed It is sometimes difficult, to know where one can begin listing in iany order of importance the necessary ingredients of a good ball club. The coach is certainly the nucleus, but in order for him to produce a winning team he must first have the talent to develop. A good ball player "now," is worth a Qanadian dozen of potential greats, unless that potential is rapidly .taking form. Present performance is more valuable that potential performance stated simply. Coach Must Produce The success of the coach then depends upon his ability to nurture high-class count performers. A championship team usually Campus Compass The Stall emains Last weekend's college basketball games brought up an old subject that has been very controversial in past years. It is the subject of the stall. Weber Stalls Examples: Weber College took its two weekend games down south by stalls. The first night against Dixie in St. George, they went into a stall with about four minues remaining which proved effective and iced the game for them. .The next night, they went into a semd-stiall near the end of he contest which also helped them win. Stall Backfires For Ags But to look ait the other sde of the fence, the Utah State Aggies, in itihedr attempt to knock the high-flying Utah Redskins went into a stall with almost seven minues left land only a four point lead. The sltall failed and .they lost 77-72. Coach LaDell Anderson received criticism because many backseat coaches felt that the Aggies were just nallying at that point and could have increased their lead, instead of seeing it melt away in the planned freeze. Redskins Try It To look back a little farther, the Utah Redskins used the stall 'themselves in the Los Angeles, Classic, in which they finished third. The opening night against West Virginia, they went into a stall ithe last five minutes and rimly hung on for a 84-83 win. After falling apart to Southern Cal the second night, they came back to whip UCLA by ten points. They did this after McGill had fouled out with ten minutes left. But instead of going into a stall they continued to fast-break for the rest of 'the game. New Ruling Proposed The subject of Ithe stall has long been a disputed one in college basketball circles. From many officials have come cries for college teams to use a time limit similar to the pros 24-second limit, in which a team would have so much i. time to shoot ithe ball, or would lose it. These officials contend a rule such as this would speed up the game of basketball, and also tend to increase crowd interest and miake games more exciting. Others want to keep college basketball seperate from the pro's and still allow teams to build up styles. And some teams particular those in the Far West, and Big eight, like to use ia slowed-down type of ball control game. The question of the stall will probably remain with us for a long while yet, and it appears it may be firmly entrenched in college basketball. The strong showing of the Western Division in the recent Na'tional Football League playoffs may come as a surprise to many. Green Bay obliterated New York 37-0, and then the Detroit Lions took the Runner-up Bowl by crushing the Philadelphia Eagles, 38-10. But when you look at the other teams in the Divisions, it is not hard to tell why the West was superior. Chicago, Baltimore, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and even Minnesota all have pretty strong teams. On the other hand, al-tthough New York, Cleveland, and Philadelphia are strong, a sharp drop to the likes of Pittsburg, Washington, Dallas, land St. Louis We "lucked-out" on all but one of our bowl picks, guessing a total ctf six right, only missing Penn State's ups-et over Geo. Tech. We'll pick the West to take the East in he NFL Pro Bowl Sunday. Weber's basketball team looked CSU. They also showed surprising good on their Southern Utah trip, especially ithe second night against depth in both contests. Individual Performance Masterful Individuals who excelled in the two contests were many. Ron Thomas's deft, twisting jump shots and tips were uncanny. Jerry Trice also showed good ability, especially as a clutch shooter. The guard-line was sparked by the defensive work of Dave Conger and hustling Lorenzo Carter. Mike Garrett land Brent Smith looked good as playmakers, and in ithe second game John Odell came 'off the bench to lead a Wildcat rally. Up front, Don Exmeyer was a sparkplug and Bruce Wilson showed tremendous potential with his 20 point output in the seoond game. possess unusual speed, exceptional height, well supervised players, good shooting ability, and an innate sense of team coordination as well as individual coordination. Desire Is The Key With these ingredients tossed into a basketball salad bowl one would surmise that the result could be nothing less than blue ribbon quality, but perhaps the most valuable ingredient of ail has been omitted desire. Desire does not insure a win, but the loss of it will insure defeat.
