'Gee- Gigantic sighs of relief were probably expelled from the Weber College basketball coach, Dick Motta, last weekend after his team won two "one-in-a-million" games. A hot-shooting Keith Allred of the University of Utah Frosh and his team mates were not put down until an overtime period declared Weber the victor. Allred never slowed down in the scoring and finished with 35 points. Trice and Thomas of Weber each broke 30 points, a big problem of oiiensive power display. Overtime Gives Weber Win The final score of this game was 106 to 99. The seven point spread came in the course of the overtime period. Although skill was important, even Coach Motta would probably concede that they were fortunate to forge ,ahead by that margin to win. It is unlikely that fans expected to see such keen competition in the Cat-U of U Frosh game, but the following night proved to be a "replay" of .the night before. Weber Maintains ICAC Lead A determined Boise Bronco squiad, lead by 6'6" Gus Johnson, nearly took possession of first place in the ICAC games. They lost by 2, they might just as well have lost by 50, for regardless of Campus Compass West loses last On Unit as Pass Our predictions that the West would beat the East in NFL Pro Bowl last Sunday came true but only by ahair-breath. Cool Johnny Unitas of the Baltimore Colts proved that his past glory is not all gone as he came off the bench in the last minute after an East fumble gave the Wast the ball to engineer a thrilling 31-30 voctory. Brown Afford Margin Deficit Jim Brown, voted the game's Most Valuable Player, had given the East their first lead when he ran over everyone enro'ute to a 70-yard touchdown dash. Ironically Brown himself fumbled the ball to set up the wild last minute come-from-behind attempt With less than a minute remaining. Unitas Sparkles Unitas threw a fifteen yard pass to Pittsburgh end, Mike Ditka, and followed with afourteen-yar-dcr to Lenny Moore also of the Colts. Both Ditka and Moore tried in vain to get out of bounds to stop the clock because the West had used all time outs. So with a first and ten on the East twelve, Unitas threw a quick pass to Moore, which was intentionally passed to stop the clock with - about fifteen seconds remaining. Won by West in Final Seconds On the last play of the game, Unitas faded back, and after fighting his way free from a would-be tackier, hit Jon Arnett who was all alone in the end zone. Jim Martin of the Detroit lions added the point after to give the West a game-winning 31-30 lead with two seconds showing on the scoreborad clock. Shades of the Colt-Giant playoff of '58! Weber Hasn't Had It Easy The Wildcat basketball squad looked good again in their crucial wins 'against Boise and the Utah Frosh. Could be that a final trip to Hutchinson, Kansas and the National Junior College Basketball Finals is in the offering for Coach Dick Motta's crew. But as far as nerves go, Coach Motta has no easy task, as most of the Wildcat victories have come the hard way in close battles. But the Weberites have shown real coolness and poise in the clutch, which is the quality of a good team. Boxing World In A Mess Gene Fullmer, Utah's Fighter of the Year, and also everybody's choice threw out a challenge to Lightheavy champ Ageless Archie Moore, at a recent award banquet. The proposed fight came probably because Fullmer cannot get a shot at Terry Downes, middleweight champ in two states and Europe, due to Downes's rematch commitments to ex-champ Paul Pender. Also, Moore is trying to line up a fight with Harold John-sion of Moore's light-heavy weight sion of Moore's light-heavyfeight crown. Moore counter - proposed that Fullmer fight Johnson first as an elimination. Old, wise Arch said that he didn't want to hurt young Fullmer's reputation by fighting him. A Solution It remains to be seen whether Archie could dispose of Gene. But how about a series of bouts (in this order) which could really stimulate interest in boxing. Fullmer vs. winner of Downes-Pender rematch. Moore vs. Johnson. Then the winners of these two bouts meet. Floyd the Professional Plays Amateur We'd like to add one request of another boxing champ. Floyd Patterson, for heaven' sakes stop defending your title against novices like McNeely, Harris, Rademacher or London, and fight Sonny Listen or even poor Eddie Machen. These two deserving contenders have been given the run-around by you for a long time. If you're going to be a champion, be a fighting one. Boxing is on the decline, and with only a few guys like Fullmer, and Moore, and Joe Brown, the Lightweight champ fighting to save it, your help is needed. Clay Might Surprise You Some day some novice just might bowl you over again (remember Ingo?) and re-awaken the boxing world. Cassius Clay is just such a novice who has bra-vedero and confidence, so if things go by your past records he should be your next opponent But even Cassius, we suspect would defend his title against Sonny Liston, record or no. Fight Floyd! the margin, Weber maintained the ICAC lead with a perfect 3-0 record while the Broncos have lost one in four outings. .. It wias a hard fought game to say the least, and credit should be given where deserved. Conger and Palfreyman of Weber each broke the double figures in scoring, while Hanson assisted Johnson for Boise. Each team displayed overwhelming desire to win. Thomas Shoots as Buzzer Sounds The disappointed Broncos lost the game on. a Thomas jumper from outside which ruffled the net as the final buzzer sounded. Boise's Gus Johnson seemed to have the Wildcats in a frenzy throughout the first half of play. But a relentless and untiring Weber five refused to regard any lead as significant. The Boise bunch saw their lead dwindle and their victory disappear like vanishing creiam. Weber Travels to Boise Saturday It could very well have been that any sigh of relief issued by Motta at the close of the contest might have been followed by a sickening realization that his team must face the Idahoans on their own court next Saturday. Gus Johnson and team should be reeking with the .thought of upset and revenge in the return tussle. They know very well that their only hope for the ICAC crown depends on a Weber loss, and it seems likely that they have the best chance to hand Weber its first morsel of defeat. Both clubs will be "up" for this one. Bowling "Roll-off" Starts In February The National Intercollegiate Bowling Totarnament will hold its Regional "roll-off in Colorado Springs, Colorado the first week in February. Duane Hedin, Union Lanes manager, urges all men students interested in trying out for .the Weber College team to register at the bowling desk. The team will consist of five men who have the highest averages after a 16-game roll-off. Deadline for the tryouts is Jan. 25. Expense Pai6! Trip The trip to Colorado Springs is expense-paid and the winning team of the regional roll-off goes to Des Moines, Iowa, to compete in the national finals. |
