The Orchestra, under the direction of Weber College instrumental musical director K. Earl Eric-ksen. will play "Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto" featuring Miss Johnson as soloist. "This is a difficult piece even for fine violinists," Mr. Ericksen said. Displayed Individual talent in the Band will be displayed by Frank Ellis playing a trumpet solo, "Trumpet Royale", and Rosemary Small accentuating a band number called "Tim-pat" on the timpani drums. Small groups coordination will come to life as David Blackinton Frank Ellis, Greg Hanson, and Lewis Mav combine in "Tournament of Trumpets" accompanied by the band. This quartet, coached by Mrs. Fayc Hanson of Ogden, will represent Utah in the Music Educators National Conference to be held in Ba.kcrsfield, California in April. r'- 7 " i r , '' , .... Barker Extemporaneous Speaking Contest will be held January 31, in Room 108 of the UB, at 11 a.m., marking the 30th year for the event. Prizes of first and second place trophies will be given to the winners. Through junior, sophomore, and freshman B.C. classes, eliminations 'are made to one junior, one sophomore, and two freshman entries in the contest. Judges Judging the contest will be members of the ,WC faculty, as well as some community people. Dr. James L. Barker, president of Weber Stake Academy a number of year ago, founded the contest after he was convinced that no college student could be properly regarded as sufficiently well educated unless he acquired skill in the traffic of human ideas. The studentbody is encouraged to attend- Aid To Speak At W.C. Brooks Hayes, special assistant to President Kennedy, will address the studentbody on Jan. 24 at 9 a.m. in the U.B. The subject of his talk will be announced later. Mr. Hayes, a native of Arkansas, was elected in 1942 as congressman from his home district 'and served eight successive terms. Members ( For two terms he was a member of the Commission on Intergovernmental Relations. He was a member of the House Banking and Currency Committee for eight years and after 1950, served on the Foreign Affairs. As a lawyer, Mr. Hayes became intensely interested in social work and became a recognized authority on farm tenancy in the South. He has long fought for the extension of education opportunities lfor Negroes in the South and has taken an active part in inter-racial organizations. Named After his defeat for a ninth term in Congress, he was named by-former President Dwight Eisenhower to the Tennessee Valley Authority board of trustees in 1959. When Mr. Kennedy took office, he appointed Mr. Hayes as assistant Secretary of State for Congressional Relations.
