Weber captured i t s fourth straight victory in ICAC competition with its 70-56 win over Boise. The victory was its second win in as nuany tries against the Broncos from Idaho. Weber edged Boise this week, 54-49 at Boise. It was Eddie Tillman and Bob Belka who provided the spark. Friday night as they led the team in scoring and both did brilliant rebounding jobs. Tillman was high scorer on the floor with 18 points and Belka was right on his heels with 17. Other top performers were Hammond and Sivulich. Weber outscored Boise by only one field goal, 25-24, but the Wildcats tanked 20 of 27 free throw attempts while the visitors were able to oonvert only eight of 19. For the most part, Weber forced Boise to shoot from long range as it threw up ia stubborn zone defense. The Broncos fell behind early in the game as they were cold from the field, but later in the game began popping in the long ones. LaMonte Harrison, getting one of his few starting assignments for Weber, impressed the fans with his timely scoring and all-around floor play. The big Malad, Idaho, freshman scored 14 points as Coach Dick Motta used him on half of his double post offense. It has now been five years since Boise has picked up a basketball victory in Ogden. Harrison got Weber off to al-0 lead Friday as he hit an early charity toss. Another by Belka and a jump shot by Tillman gave the Wildcats a 4-0 spread before Byron Tapp broke the ice for Boise. The Wildcats quickly increased the spread to 9-2 and the Broncos were never in the game after that. At the midway mark in the first half Weber held a 24-11 advantage and increased it to 40-24 at half-time.The lead in the second half varied from 12 to 21 points. Boise closed the gap to 48-36 early in the half, but then Wber increased it to 60-41 a few minutes later. M Price Toiiife By Keith Shupe Signpiost Staff Writer The Wildcats invade the south tonight and tomorrow for a cru cial swing through Price and Ephratm to meet Carbon and Snow colleges. Carbon is the first team to face Weber, and will be tough on its home court even though it lost both its games this past week to Dixie 84-70, and to CSU 75-69. The Carbon Eagles are now in a three-way tie for third place with Snow and Ricks. Plays Snow Weber plays Snow tomorrow Saturay, January 28, at Ephraim. Snow split their games this past week, winning over CSU on the road by a 85-77 score and loosing Saturday to Dixie 60-54. Both clubs will be fighting harder this week end to get back on the winning side and to move out of a third place tie. If Weber can turn back both clubs this week end they will be in good position in league standings with a 6-9 record. Starting Unit Coach Dick Motta will likely go along with the same starting unit that played in last week's Boise game. Mike Sivulich, and Lorenzo Carter at guards; Eddie Tillman and Phil Johnson at forwards and Bob Belka at .center. This crew has been doing very well lately and if they falter the coach has a strong bench to relieve his fine starters. Weber returns to a home court for a game against Snow at Ben Lomond high gym February 3. All out of town games will be broadcast over KLO at 7:55 p.m. Lecture Number Features Mauler Named by the Associated Press as "The Greatest Heavyweight" of the first half of the present centry, Jack Dempsey will appear in a featured father's and son's program Feb. 2, at 8:15 p.m. in the Ogden High School Auditorium. All male students who like a real "stag" should attend. "The Dempsey success story should be an inspiration to all young men," said Dr. Clair Johnson in charge of the event Good Team Support In IfJ ! A By Sue Parkinson W.I.A. Reporter The W.I.A. basketball for last week showed not only good team support, but also sportmanship and high competition, Sharmea finally got to play, and after two weeks rest through other teams forfeits, used their reserved energy to pounce L. D. Lambda Delta Sigma O. T., T. K. forfeited to the Nurses, and the Faculty faked Independents out. Basketball Clinic A basketball referee clinic will be held Friday at 1:00 for all those who find themselves in the "crude referee" set. Snow Carnival The snow carnival has been scheduled for February 3rd, and W.I.A, has planned a saucer race and a snow shoe race to correspond with the skiing and sculpturing. Y. U. I was reading a little book that the duties of a sports reporter are to encourage enthusiasm in all sports, so I would like to encourage all those who don't read this column to participate. |
