For three consecutive years Excelsior has kept the traveling trophy by sticking to a simple but effective formula: "If you can't outplay them, outnumber them." -Excelsior not only took a good portion of all the IM contests at Weber since lit.",:', but managed to always win those all important ping pong, hand-ball, tennis and foul pitch shooting games. Rut this year Excelsior has sputtered badly in the two major team sports, touch football and volleyball. Their lack of entrants in the ping pong finals might have sounded the death knell for Excelsior in this year's IM battle. For a time, Sigma was expected to take up the slack left by Excelsior but Sigma's notorious indifference to minor sports might cost them in the trophy race. -. rhoenix seems all wrapped up in running thecollege and throwing dances and parties. It appears that the sisters might "give up the ghost" in favor of more distaff activities. Delta Phi, the returned missionaries club, is girding to put on a late season rush for the trophy and held an early season basketball practice Saturday afternoon on the East Ogden Stake court. The Missionaries had no less than ten men out for the abbreviated workout. Alpha Rho, always tough in the water sports, touched off consternation in the Excelsior and Sigma camps by winning three places in ping pong. The Blue Knights, flexing their muscles for the first time in years, lead the IM fight now by 50 points. Although anything could pop up between now and Softball in the spring, from their past record Excels still must be considered the IM favorite. Alpha Rho and Sigma both look like strong contenders. Delta Phi's strong leadership and unsullied physical condition puts the Missionaries in the dark horse role. Whoever wins the traveling trophy will be the club that has boys entered in ping pong, tennis, swimming, hand-ball, foul pitch shooting and jacks, mark my word. a Rio in Top Spot As 1 M Basketball Starts Alpha Rho's Blue Knights enjoyed the giddy heights of the first rung on Weber's intra-mural ladder today following their resounding one, two, three finish in ping pong. After losing their shirt tails in touch football and placing third in volleyball, Alpha Rho's sleeping giant rose on the ping pong talents of Bob White, Bill Murdock and L. Day to sweep nonchalantly into a 50 point first place bulge. The independents, in first during touch football, took a back seat to the Blue Knights. They are in turn followed by Sigma and Excelsior, the- two sleeping giants. AN INVITATION TO SKIERS OF ALL CLASSES IP- I Look Sharp! Feel Sharp! Ski Sharp! . . . SPOUT SHOP 3059 Harrison Blvd. Bored Attitude Alpha Rho's ascension from last to first was done with amazing simplicity as their two strongest contenders among the clubs exhibited their usual bored attitude toward the "minor" sports. By Marv Protzman With their first win, a (0-5S decision over Hill P'ield under their belt, the Weber Wildcats will attempt to christen the new season in the same fashion when Weber meets Ricks Friday. So far this season the Ricks team has lost two close games to Rocky Mountain College; beat the Idaho State Freshman team; Carroll College, and split a pair with Western Montana. They were the ICAC league champions last year with a 13-1 record. The Wildcats so far inpre-sea-son battles have won only one. In a recent road trip that covered 3000 miles and "J games in 11 days the Wildcats came out without a single win. But according to Coach Swenson every man on the squad gained experience, the main purpose of pre-season encounters. The Weberites will be bolstered by three new transfers in the coming league games: Abe Booker, Vic Durbano, and Bill Goodell.
