Show START NO FIRES By Larry Tomlinson Signpost Sports Writer If this year's Weber Wildcat Five is going to duplicate last season's record then Coach Reed Swenson will have to inject the boys with nHrpnalin. After nlavinir a total of ten games, the won-lost column is leaning far to the negative side with 8 defeats as against 2 wins. Among the 8 set-backs are 3 before locals in the college gymna sium; something that happened only twice in 1054-'55. Perhaps the team has had too much holiday but with eight letter men returning more was expected of this squad than has been deliv ered to date. After observing the three home games one might be led to be-lipve that these boys.' are really "cool" cats. Not in the way they dress but in the luck they have been having at the hoop so far.- Every team has a cold mgnt at the basket but a trio of them on the home court lends way to drastic action. It was a trade mark of last year's team to consistently display that golden touch at the hoop although that team did leave something to be desired in floor play. This year's team, however, hasn't yet begun to even match last year's floor play and is a far cry from the scoring ability of last year's squad. If Weber is going to defend last year's three-way conference championship then a winning combination will have to jell fast. All is not lost, however, out of seven preseason games in '54 the Wildcats lost six. At least we won two this year. Weber's court squad complete with championship potential and a backlog of defeats heads for Price, Utah, today where they will clash with Carbon College cagers in an attempt to reap a conference victory. At press time Coach Reed K. Swenson was still experimenting with his charges in an attempt to utilize the full potential of the squad by coming up with a winning combination to throw at the Carbon team. This game marks conference play for the second m the Wildcats. They opened the race last night on the Weber floor by meeting Ricks College of Rexburg. Barring travel fatigue, the Cats should have an easier time with Carbon than they had with Ricks last night if any value can be placed on pre-season predictions. Weber has found the sledding pretty rough to date as far as com petition is concerned. The Cats have dropped eight pre-season games to top college teams throughout southern, intermoun-tain, and northern regions. In nearly every game to date, however. Weber has been in the game up until the final seconds of play. A "main five" is nonexistant on the Wildcat squad and so far that has been the difference between victory and defeat; inability to come up with the "right" combination.Coach Swenson will probably start with Don Clifford, Duane Loveland, Garth Hansen, Reese Quayle and Glen Campbell. This combination will give the Cats a definite height advantage although Carbon's center towers ft. 7 in. EBER CATS, BEAT CARBON CAGERS Ike and fiixon For a 2nd Term? By Associated Collegiate Press Minneapolis (ACP) The question of whether or not President Eisenhower will run for a second term is still very much up in the air. But if he does decide to run for a second term, will Richard Nixon be selected as his running mate again? To get the collegian's point of view on this issue ACP posed the following question to a representative cross-section of college students : If Ike runs for president in 1956 for a second term, do you think vice-president Richard Nixon will be selected as his running partner ? The Results: Men Women Total Yes 50 55 52 No ....30 33 31 Undecided 1.-20 12 17 Students feeling the two will run together again (if Ike runs) usu ally comment somewhat along the line of a Purdue University (La fayette, Ind.) freshman who says they cooperate very well togeth er." A University of Minnesota (Minneapolis) graduate student says "Why not? He's a good man." A freshman attending the Richmond Professional Institute (Richmond, Va.) gives a politically oriented answer when he says "Nixon is definitely being groomed as presidential timber, since he is from a pivotal state having a large electoral vote. Students who believe Nixon will not be selected to run with Ike do so for a variety of reasons. Many think Nixon has created needless controversy by his many accusa tions against the Democrats. A sophomore coed at the University of Minnesota says, "He has caused a lot of bad feelings and stirred up Washington opinion against him "He is not as popular and as well liked as Ike ' says a fresh man coed attending Regis college (Weston, Mass.), while another Purdue University freshman feels "He (Nixon) has traveled more than any other Vice-President and hasn't stayed in Washington doing his lob enough. The majority of students feel however, that if Ike runs again Nixon will be a "shoo-in as hi: runnintr partner. Perhaps a large share of this opinion can be summed into the statement of a St. Thomas college (St. Paul, Minn.) sopho-' more who says "If Ike wants Nixon as his Vice-President no one else stands a chance."
