Under the brilliant direction of Carl V. White, the Weber College stage became the scene of a dormitory room at Good Hope College in which Kay Kanin's wise comedy was artfully enacted. It has been agreed that this play- was mature entertainment. Goodbye, My Fancy" had something to say and said it ina new, exciting way. When Agatha Reed, successful congresswomen and alumna of Good Hope College paid a visit to her old school, she made President James Merrill aware of the fact that seven new buildings on the campus couldn't mean much unless within those buildings the students could be fortified to meet the challenges life would force them to encounter.A college administrator must indeed be a magical mixture of business man and educator; he must please a public who still has the archaic idea of youth as a time in which the mind is free from responsibility and he must educate a youth that is, diametrically, eager to accept responsibilty. Jim Merrill, a failure in the eyes of realistic Agatha Reed, argued that he was forced to concede many small things to achieve the great ones. She answered him by asking if he hadn't lost his ability to discern between the small and great things. Public opinion and pressure cause many noble purposes to become contorted and forced into second chair positions. After the diploma is fastened securely in a book of memories, a student must remember more than the ivy covered walls and modern heating system of his college. The talented players in "Goodbye, My Fancy", did indeed present before us a very real and vital problem. One-Act Plays Are Scheduled for Quarter Seven one-act plays are on the agenda for the Theater Workshop this quarter. The group has chosen to use one-act plays for two main reasons: One-act plays will give better casting opportunities for the students, a little better than a score of students are participating some in more than one play; and, second it gives a more flexible offering for public performances. These plays will be used both on and off the campus. Some of them may be offered in Cellar Theater performances, others will be offered' singly or in combinations before school and church audiences, still others will be presented before various club or other groups in the community or in adjacent towns. Selected ones will be included in the traveling shows offered to high schools in the area as official entertainment programs of the college. These plays have been selected for their individual effectiveness and for their variety in mood and situation; they are entitled, "Why I am a Bachelor," "Judge Lynch." "Enter the Hero," "The No Account Boy," "Red Peppers," "Hanging and Wiving," and "Low Bridge." IDEA Never reject an idea because it seems small. You can never tell where it may lead. Sunday Express. (London) Do You Want an Idea On Your Future Job? By Dr. William D. Stratford Each year, between three hundred and four hundred students in the Weber College Family do not feel absolutely certain about their vocational choices. They become caught between two or three desires or choices and seem to be unable to solve the problem or make a single choice. For example, one will want to be a salesman qx a business owner. Another wants to be either a psychiatrist, a surgeon or a general practitioner in medicine. Some of the very finest of our students are caught in this way between choices. But no worry need be involved. Their inability to choose affects negatively their class work and their entire. college program, oftentimes leading to a withdrawal from college, which is the worst possible step. Many of these students who reveal this lack of ability to choose among jobs are victims of a popular falacy. This fallacy, which is as dangerous as a disease, and as widespread, consists of this: In the absence of the major prophets, we cannot foresee the future enough to plan through two or four years of college to prepare for a precise job, in a definite location, with a particular employer. We can, however, plan on preparing for a job family a grouping of similar jobs which require similar preparation. For example, the young man who cannot decide between salesmanship and ownership of a business doesn't have to make this decision... His job family classification actually is that of a business major, and he can take courses which will prepare him for salesmanship and business administration. Irt other work, he can combine majors. As a matter of fact, the way most people learn to operate a business is by being salesmen, by working long and hard at their sales positions, by saving their money, by learning how to get along with people and by "learning the ropes." This student who wants both salesmanship and business administration should group his jobs into one major job family and take courses to fit the family group. He has no worry at all on this point. Another example is the young man who doesn't know whether he wants to be a general practitioner in medicine, a psychiatrist or a pediatrician. All of these require a minimum basic three years ofpre-medi-cine and a planned three or four years of medicine. This young man doesn't need to worry about these choices. Let him prepare for this progressive job family grouping of medicine ,,,,, . .j. NOTICE!! Ogden Merchants... Weber Boasts Fine Farming Course New agricultural courses covering farm machines, animal husbandry, pest control, and plants and soils are now in operation at Weber college. "The new practical program in agriculture was set up with the idea of allowing students to learn by doing and earn while learning," stated Mr. Monk, agricultural instructor. The classes, seven in number, cover many phases of agriculture. The classes include a few lectures but most of the study is done in direct contact with the subject. Classes visit farm implement houses, the stock yards and many other places of interest to their study. Foreign Languages Assembly Success "Foreigners." took over the program last Friday and produced one of the best assemblies at Weber for some time. Congratulations to the language class for a parade of talent that in turn, had the audience either splitting their sides or listening in awed silence to one of the great renditions of foreign songs. General opinion of students after the assembly was "let's have more of the same." POLEMICS ALAMODE (EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the sixth of a series of controversial articles continued from last year and devoted to the pro-con discussions of current national, international and local issues. The feature is sponsored jointly by the International Relations club and signpost. Today's topic is: "Should Women Be Drafted?" By Thelda Baker Why in the 4000 years the world has been having wars, have women never been drafted into military service? It is because of the universal recognition of the basic differences that men or women play in social cultures. The Affirmative maintains that women, having equal rights with men, should therefore accept equal - . - responsibilities . I believe in equal rights, but do not feel it necessarily follows that society will benefit the most by giving men and women the same job to do. Man, being physically stronger (we admite this and no more), has always been the proctector of the home. This is essentially "what he is fighting for". Mother Is Vital He needs this basic motivation to make him a good soldier. The woman's contribution as a home-maker and .mother is equally as vital as the man's. In her hands are the future generation of Americans. She does not have to go into the military service to justify her rights to equal privileges with men. Equal Rights? If women are forced by draft to take over jobs that men are doing on the equal rights, equal responsibilities theory, should they be forced to give these jobs back when the men return? If so, where are equal rights? If not, where will the men find jobs? It could result in unhappy marriages, broken homes and a national unemployment problem. Lower Moral Standards Drafting of women would bring about a lowering of our moral standards. The same deplorable evils of war that tend to break down social barriers of the boys away from home is applicable to the girls. Society depends mainly upon the women to uphold social ethics. Would Leave Home By draft girls will be taken out of homes and home communities. Otherwise the majority would find jobs where they could serve as well and still be under parental influence. No Need to Replace Men While women have demonstrated that they are intelligent, capable and well suited to perform many of the services required in military organizations, there is not the need to replace as many men in various jobs as one might at first suppose. Many have physical disabilities which make it impossible for them to serve on the fighting front. Peel First Potato With freedom of choice, women By Gloria Jorgensen It has been found that there is a real need for women with specialized training in our defense program. Strive for Equal Rights Women have been striving for equal right with men for over two centuries. Drafting them would help bring about the equalization. It would allow them to share equally in the responsibilities pressed upon free American citizens. Up to the present women have shared, though not quite equally, in local, state, and national governmental affairs; but have not been called upon to share equally in the tasks of maintaining our freedom from aggression or fulfilling our obligations as a member of the United Nations. Did During Last War The need for women in military service was recognized during the last war. They released many men for combat training and heavy duties. Under the new defense program there will be over 100,000 office jobs which can be filled by women, thus releasing men for combat training. Worked in Many Fields Women proved they could handle more than just secretarial jobs during the last war. Many worked with radar, radio, in medical corps, liaison work, messenger work, and motor pool jobs. There will be about 75,000 jobs open to science students in the new defense program. Many of these positions can be filled by women and herein lies a great opportunity for more women to get into many kinds of scientific work. Aid Education By drafting eligible women for. the many non-combat duties in our army, many young men could be allowed to pursue scientific training in our colleges and universities. This would make them of infinitely more value to the defense effort. Such draft procedure would also encourage more women to take technilogical studies than have done so before; thus increasing their intrinsic value to our nation. The above statements are valid reasons why women should expect to be drafted to the aid of their country. find the jobs for which they are best suited. Under the well known "army way" skilled accountants and secretaries find themselves labeled "Cooks" ,'and proceed to peel their first potato. No Need to Draft There is no actual need to draft women into the service. It is demoralizing to force a person to do something he is willing to do voluntarily, and women have shown their willingness to serve where they are needed without being drafted.
