EDITORIAL Good Citizen Needs Knowledge Just how many times have you heard the statement, "I don't know why I have to take this course, it will never do me any practical good,"? This seems to be quite a common statement on many campuses of late. Well, just why should an English major, for instance, have to take classes in life science, and physical science. For one reason, the student should be so interested in the physical and biological things that surround him that he would be glad to take a course or two in these fields just to further his knowledge in them. Furthermore, it seems that to get along well in society, a person needs to have a fairly well rounded background in all the fields, if for nothing else than to be a good conversationalist. These things are all basic to the world we live in, so basic that we need to understand them in order to get along with one another. One can find many practical uses for fundamentals learned in a general Physical Science class ; quite often he can apply these to make his life more comfortable and certainly he can better understand the modern "miracles" which make his life so easy and pleasurable to live. By the same token, a basic study of the Life Sciences will make a person appreciate his natural surroundings more. He can also be made to understand the physiological problems of his own type better. Need there be more reasons for a study of these subjects? New Campus Sports Big rovement It's Real Easy Imp in Parking By BOB ROBERTS Even though the place is crawling with cars, it is probably easier to park on the campus this year than ever before. The Department of Buildings and Grounds announces that in the near future the parking facilities on the campus will be better than ever. Wallace Baddley, superintendent, said that he has enlisted the aid of the entire department to provide a smooth pattern of parking. Not only has the department gone all out to solve the parking problem, but also has provided numerous other sendees to add to the convenience of students. The new buildings were first occupied in the fall of 1954, the area south of the buildings was privately owned. Only Three Rows The only parking available then was the three rows on the surfaced area south of the buildings. When school began, it was immediately evident that this was insufficient, so part of the space north of the buildings was leveled and graveled for use. In the spring of 1955 the parking area just south of the buildings was purchased by the college and immediately graveled. The parking area south of the classroom buildings has not been surfaced because it is planned that the new library building will be located in that area. With the completion of this building parking areas will be developed farther south. New Surfaces With the completion of the Technical Education Building this year, the permanent curb and gutter was installed during the summer. This is on the north road. The permanent parking area north and west of that building has been surfaced. The balance of the area has not been surfaced to date because pres- " N i. mmafr&X- V - I - ' : ""fm J?, I -l l - i t I y " Anyone wanting to make a home for a poor satelliteless dog, call at the newly established "Mutnick" pound. There are many new areas and the motorists are not going without a place to put the prized auto this year. Note the order and neatness of the new lots. ent plans call for one additional building to be located west of the new Technical Education Building. It is possible that the construction of this building will not be completed for several years. Serious consideration is now being given to surfacing the entire parking area north of the buildings. Funds are not available for this purpose at the present time, but may be available to complete this work during the summer of 1958. Some questions have been asked concerning the reasons why the cars using the surfaced parking area south of the buildings must park headed uphill. This arrangement was made after carefully considering the movement of traffic in that area. During dry weather it would make little difference whether cars were parked uphill or downhill. During the months of the school year when snow and ice cover this area the parking lot would be almost un-useable if. cars were parked headed downhill. Under the present arrangement, regardless of how much snow and ice exists in the lot, parked cars can always back out and leave the campus. During the three years that this area has been used, the decision to park according to the present arrangements has proved to be a wise one.
