Weber Finishes Pre-Season Schedule With Record of 6 Wins, 4 Losses Weber college finished its preseason schedule with a record of four wins and six losses for a percentage of .400. B.Y.U. was the first opponent and they defeated the Wildcats as did the Utah Aggie Frosh. Hill Field was next on the list and they also dumped Weber. All these games were played away from home. Weber gave indications of things to come as they jumped into the win column by beating the Snow Badgers by a score of 50 to 48. On the next night they beat Dixie by the score of 60 to 43. Weber then traveled to California to play a Compton Junior college team. The score of this game was 60 to 43 in favor of Compton. Weber then entered the B.A.C. tournament. They had rather bad luck in this tournament winning only one game and losing two to finish sixth. Compton beat them in the tournament for the second time of the season. Peterson and Butler were selected in balloting by the other team members to guide the Cat crew in their quest for the conference crown. "Bones" Butler hails from Ogden high where he was an all-around athletic, lettering in football, basketball, and track. Butler, who is a Sophomore, also played on Weber's pigskin machine. Freshman Peterson played at Morgan High last year making quite a name for himself as a all-state basketball selection. "Pete" is currently leading Weber college in scoring. 3 3 0 9 4 10 9 3 4 0 10 6 1 1 13 10 0 2 0 0 0 0 Miller 0 0 0 0 Reese 0 0 0 0 Jester 0 0 0 0 20 13 7 53 TOTALS 22 10 5 54 Score by quorters: Weber 12 25 43 53 Boise 18 32 43 54 Officials: Andrews arid Fishburn. n rinn rrr (nfT? The Ski Club Forms Although the winter season has seemed painfully prolonged to some of us, the skiing students of Weber college have become painfully overbearing in their exhilaration with each snowfall, and look forward with zest to three months of skiing (God and the local Draft Board willing). Plans have been made for the formation of a Weber college Ski Club, which will be affiliated with the Snow Basin Ski club. The organization's calendar will include two or three parties (Simmer down sode pop only!), and an inter-club race. Another activity of the club will be to solve the problem of transportation. Anyone (excluding feeble-minded students and Sigma members) interested in joining may do so by caressing. the palm of Darrel Cottle with the entrance fee. Wildcats Claw Snow Badgers 50 to 43 Starting the new year off with a bang, the Wildcats from Weber eked out a wild and wooly two point victory over a talented Snow five. For Weber, who were behind almost the whole game, it was a team victory with that never-say-die attitude pulling the game out of the loss column. Weber got off to a bad start if you can call it a start trailing 15 to 6 at the quarter. But Coach Reed Swenson started substituting and the Cats pulled to within 3 points of Snow at half-time. The smooth passing Badgers forged back to a 42 to 35 lead at the end of the third quarter and that's when the fun began. With fresh men in for Weber the Cats kept pecking away until with five minutes left in the game they trailed 44 to 41. Don Butler, with two men hanging on his arm, then proceeded to make an ungodly lay up and on the resulting foul shot tied up the skirmish at 44 all. Farley, who was a thorn in Weber's back all night, put Snow back in the lead on a foul pitch only to see Larry Peterson connect with a Cats Smother Parsons, 73 to 57 Weber college cagers won their first conference game of the season' and in so doing sprang an upset as they downed a surprised bunch of Westminster Parsons by a score of 73 to 57. Weber jumping to a seven point lead at the end of the first quarter easily coasted to the victory. In fact the Purple and White crew weren't even content with coasting as they poured in 22 points in the last quarter. For Bark Ballif it was almost a personal victory as he tanked 22 big points, pouring them in from all over the court. Larry Peterson gave able assistance pumping in 17 points, mostly on jump shots. The Parsojis, who were playing on their home court, never could set up a defense to stop the hot Weber five. Westminster was led in scoring by Prokopis who had 17 points and Steel who contributed 11. The teams traded baskets. Snow, frantic. to get the ball, fouled Mark Baliff with Weber deciding to take the ball out of bounds. Peterson slipped in for the clinching basket and that was all for the William's coached aggregation. Weber stalled out the remaining seconds limiting Snow to a foul shot. The game was marred by spotty passing especially by the Weber crew. Little (5'10") Floyd Farley with brilliant shooting and fancy dribbling stood out for Snow as did calm Carl Hamann. Peterson was outstanding on the backboards for Weber also being the high scorer on the floor with 16 points. Jay Brown tossed in a couple of dillies and big Glen Hadfield surprised quite a few with a sensational hook shot. Weber had things mostly their own way with the half time ending at 28-25. The Parsons started the second half like a house afire going ahead mid-way in the third period 33 to 34. But Weber sparked by deadly jump shot artist Larry Peterson and tip in king Hon Wilkinson, fought back to a 58-58 standstill. With 20 seconds remaining in the game Steele for Westminster hit a itmely jump shot that fired the Parsons ahead to 58 to 60. But Weber with that never-say-die spirit capitalized on a long lead pass from freshmen Jay Brown to hustling Don Butler who dribbled through Westminster team to sink a remarkable drive-in, that iced the contest at 60 to 60. Weber outlasted the five minute over time to take the inspired contest 71-68. Larry Peterson gained high respect from Westminster's team as he hit with that remarkable jump shot to take game honors with 21 counters. Big Ron Wilkinson not far behind Peterson hit with tipins from all angles to rack up 19 points. Don Butler stole the show as he did some fancy ball hocking and passing. Also Butler brought the stands to their feet with that timely drive-in that knotted the score at 60-60. For Westminster Prokopis and Steele were standouts with 18 and 17 points respectively. A Texan was showing a visitor from Boston the Alamo and other shrines where Texans gave a valiant account of themselves against overwhelming odds. With a smug smile, the Bostonian said, "You know, New England has had its heroes too. Paul Kevere, for example.""Paul Kevere?" questioned the Texan scoffingly. "You mean that little feller that had to ride for help?" Country Gentleman, They just can't seem to block Hadfield's hook shot. |
