Show Page 2 SIGNPOST Friday, March 9, 1951 Let's Think of Our Anthem! O, Thus be it ever when free men shall stand Between their loved homes and wars desolation! Blest wth victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land Praise the power that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, - And this be our motto; "In God is our trust!" And the Star Spangled Banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave! Deep into the hearts of more and more young men of our great country this stirring third verse of our National Anthem is beginning to take root. Loved homes are being sacrificed for war's desolation. The thoughts of having a home, a wife and children to love are beginning to take a back seat in the minds of young men now because our great and wonderful nation is once again in danger. THEN CONQUER WE MUST, WHEN OUR CAUSE IT IS JUST, AND THIS IS OUR MOTTO: "IN GOD IS OUR TRUST". These are great words with even a greater meaning. True 'Americans have never failed to respond to the call of duty when freedom and liberty hang in the balance. Aggression has never appealed to the American people and with power of God it never will. One of the most stirring group of words in our great Nation's song is "IN GOD IS OUR TRUST". What is more important to Americans than the freedom to worship God? To put our beliefs before God brings into our minds one of the basic teachings of all Christianity: Faith brings many things. Those who have this attribute have rejoiced in the blessings of a contented mind, and have enjoyed peace and happiness that they could not receive in any other way. Yes, THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER IN TRIUMPH SHALL WAVE O'ER THE LAND OF THE FREE AND THE HOME OF THE BRAVE." Brave? Maybe, but also it could be the tradition that is introduced into American men at childhood; the tradition that a home thatiis worth loving, is worth fighting for. The thought prevails in the minds of many Americans that our fighting men who have paved a path of sparkling victories all over the world are not brave men fighting just for the love of fighting. Instead, they are fighting against an evil that could deteriorate our very principles of democracy. American men are once again leaving to take up arms to down the aggressor and the words of a great song will forever be on the minds of all of them. POLEMICS (EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the tenth of a series of controversial articles continued from last year and devoted to the pro-con discussions of current national, international and local issues. The feature is sponsored jointly by the International Relations club and Signpost. Today's Topic is: "Should Young People Get Married Before the Boy Enters the Armed Forces ? Pro By Pat Andrews I have been asked to give my opinion on the question to marriage by those couples who know one or the other will enter the service. I am naturally prejudiced on this subject, but I think that I can effectively prove my reasons for being so. -If believe that if young people really want to get married they should not let the entering of the service stop their plans. This does not mean that I condone getting married just because one is entering the service and wants to have some one at home. However, if a couple has known each other long enough to be sure of their emotions and want to marry there is no reason for them to wait. People won't wait forever for those things they want, for if they did they would never accomplish anything in life. Some one may say "what if he gets killed and leaves you a family to support". Don't you take the same chances in civilian life or during peace time. Auto deaths since 1906 total more than deaths received in all the wars fought in the history of the United States. Young couples should not shy away from marriage just because of this. Death is unprevent-able so why let its possibility stop our progressing or living a useful life while we are still young. The notion that people are expressing today that young couples should wait until the wartime conditions cease to exist is foolish. In the Bible it is stated that there will always be wars or rumors of wars. Where would the nation be today if young people had not married during the First World War. Marriage should be governed by whether the young people want to get married and are ready for such an undertaking not to the conditions prevalent in the world. Happiness is the condition that we all have to work for; its just like any other property that we possess. It is not given to us unless some one has worked for the privilege. We don't lay down on the job or quit just because the undertaking looks tough. Instead we work twice as hard for what we want to achieve as our goal. No one will give you happiness for nothing in return. War or no war don't let any one take away your right to happiness. Standards Help Make Weber A Better School The Standards Committee would like to remind Weber students of a few rules and suggestions that would aid in making our college more efficient. PARKING Do not park in the unloading zone in front of President Dixon's home. Do not park in any bus zones or in front of the College Inn. Do not park on the East side of the street on Porter Ave., in front of Annex 3. You may park in the parking lot just North of the Moench building or any other place that has not been restricted. LOST AND FOUND If you have found anything around the campus report it to the Cashier's office where a lost and found department ALAMODE Con By Corene Martin "It is a woman's (and a man's) prerogative to change his or her mind." For that reason, the answer to the question "Should young people get married before the boy enters the armed forces?" is NO. How do you know that you will continue to feel the same about the boy you are waiting for, or vice versa? Maybe it is just an infatuation, and the "real guy or gal" is waiting for you just around the corner. Too Young Another very outstanding objection is that the affianced boy and girl are young. Too young to know what they are looking for in a lifelong mate. If it is true love, it will last forever and the couple can make a fresh start when he gets home from the service. Start Out.. With Plans It's a much better feeling to be able to start out with a lot of plans for a future together, rather than have a few weeks with the boy before he leaves for parts unknown. You may be separated for years, and maybe forever. Is it fair to the boy to wonder what would happen to his wife if he shouldn't come back? Will He Remain True? How do you know your "better half" will remain true to you? Every time there is a war, many soldiers marry girls from foreign countries. Remember the last world war? Thousands of service men married girls from Germany, France, Great Britain, Japan and other countries. Girls Meet Boys Many of the girls who stay at home work in Veterans Hospitals, help the Red Cross and entertain at the local USO. They meet boys from all over the country. Maybe the girl will meet someone new. Then, too, what a hardship on both of them if children come along. The child must be raised in a fatherless home, the mother must assume the role of both father and mother, and the father is a stranger to his child. Like to Be Shackled For boys and girls who have gone out with almost anyone they pleased during their high school days, it is just like being shackled to be deprived of going out with members of the opposite sex, especially if their married partner is miles away. From the timely and pertinent arguments set forth, young people should realize that it is better to wait a while and then have a rosy future for two; rather than have a few weeks together, and nothing stable for the future. has been setup. Anything you have misplaced please refer to the Cashier's office and see if it has been turned in or reported. STOLEN ARTICLES In any school there are a few examples of dishonesty and Weber is no exception. It will help if all students are extra careful with their belongings and keep track of them. KEEP WEBER CLEAN Weber has the reputation of being a very clean school but of course it is impossible to keep it so if the student body does not cooperate. Do not throw things around the halls. (Things include scrap paper, pencils and girl friends.) BONNERS BLURB By Jim Bonner Received a letter from a former Weberite the other day who is whiling away his time in Korea, building various projects for the army. Don Layton by name. Don was in the inactive reserve and was recalled some time ago and shipped to the jewel of the Orient. He informs we that one of Weber's ex-outstanding all-around athletes, "Stirk" Gardner, is in the same company and that Stirk has it made as usual, working in the supply tent. With his usual satirical sense of humor, Don signed off with the following excerpt "Your friend and United Nations ambassador of good will among the heathen," very aptly sums the Korean situation up, don't you think so? Shame on Pat Hollcraft Embarrassing moments arose for Pat Hollcraft recently in Mr. Hancock's Spanish class. Following his usual routine, Mr. Hancock had the students go to the board and construct sentences in Spanish. When he arrived at Miss Hollcraft's sentence on the board, a hitherto lackadaisical class suddenly snapped to life and stared at this sentence to see if they had read it correctly the first time. In Spanish the sentence read, "Hice el Pandero en la cocina." Translated to English, "You shouldn't have told anyone, Pat." For the correct translation, contact our linquist expert, Senor Don Barney. . Gambling House Closed The Golden Nugget Casino was informally evicted from the premises of the C. I. last week by Constable Sheppard. "Bet-a-Penney" Jensen founder of the casino, announced that operations would commence again as soon as a desirable location was found. His dealer, Marilyn Howard, said she could see nothing wrong with such a pastime in the C. I. as it helped take your mind off of the terrible tasting coffee. Good Going Bill! Congrats to Bill Hull for garnering most valuable player award in the regional tourney. You deserved it Bill. Den Mother Jan Cooper and- Darlene Powell had a new addition to their family last week another little Brownie. How many Brownies do you have now, Mom's? Education Helps All of you fellows who do not believe that education is a definite help in the service, just glance around the campus at some of the instructors. For example, we have two Lt. Col.'s Mr. Bateman and Mr. Dayton; U. S. Navy Commander Stratford; Lt. Comdr. Collett and Capt. Strong of the Air Force; just to mention a few. College Aids in Officership Of course if you're content to remain in the enlisted ranks as a private, then forget college and enlist. Then one year from your date of enlistment casually observe the difference between your daily routine and that of your lowest ranking officer. An officer is a leader (that's what congress says anyhow) and every branch of the armed services give preference to fellows with college education when choosing officer material. Need to Diet ? Cora Erickson the mighty mite of the C. I., thought at first it must be a glandular disturbance of some sort causing her anatomical deformity midway between her head and heels on the leeward side. After consulting with Bob Jones she revised her first analysis and switched to Rye-Crisp. Marilyn Jones is also considering treatment for the same allergy. Farewell Jim This is my last column so I bid you all adieu as I'm headed for the big city next quarter to attend the U. of U. Scenic Wonders Will Be Seen on Trip Rock fantasy covered with snow will be one of the many attractions to be seen at Bryce and Zion Canyons during the field trip sponsored by Geodiscipulus from March 16 to 19. Originally planned for Washington's Birthday, the trip was postponed because of sub-zero temperatures (17 degrees below zero at Brrr-ice). The club welcomes all venturesome persons with $21.00 and four days to spend viewing some of Nature's magnificent wonders. |
