The Cats will be fortified with 12 men and their luggage. Inasmuch as the fishing season is closed in Texas, the boys will have to limit their recreation to swimming, sight-seeing and basketball.Some boys took sun hats and dark glasses to protect their eyes from eyestrain, and the averages and percentages from dismantling. The Cats had plenty of time to sharpen up on their jokes and songs since test week was under their belts at the end of the week. The Cats will be Jolly and hope to Perry many thrusts at the basket. Coach Swenson explained, "We expect to win and to lose also. The trip will be an interesting one and also tiring. We will play every night and therefore will have to travel every day. Tyler Junior College of Tyler, Texas, has in the last four years finished in the top five junior college teams of the nation." Pre-season schedules have always had a definite bearing on the season's record, one coach maintained. To have a background in experience and team cooperation enables the team to play better under pressure. A good team must have their plays down to perfection.The traveling team is made up of twelve boys: Bob Subic, Curt Van Alfen, Bob Nish, Gary Jesperson, Keith Olson, John Jolly, Ralph Johnson, John Parry, Tom Hanson, Lew Wright, Clark Draayer, and Doyle Hubber. A big feature of entertainment was the free ring bout with a representative from each club. The boys were all blindfolded and armed with one over-weight glove. " "' '" . v .- - V veber opens casaba season with victory The Weber Wildcats made their debut into the 1953-54 hoop season Friday, November 20, by downing the Hill Field Airman 70-63 in the Weber Gym. Coach Reed Swenson used his entire squad in the encounter trying to find a winning combination. The Purple and White got off to a good start as Keith Ohlsen put in two consecutive foul shots to put Weber ahead 2-0. This lead was never overcome during the contest. During the first quarter the teams remained on pretty even ground, and when the first stanza was over Weber was on the long end of a 16-13 score. The second quart cv saw the whole Weber team hitting con-sistantly. Big Don Nish and Bob Subic were tipping in shots under the basket and Curtis Van Alfen and Keith Ohlson hit from the outside. As the first half came to a close the Wildcats held a nine point margin, 36 to 27. The second half saw the Wildcats increase their lead still more. On a lay-in by Nish Weber led the Airmen 50 to 33. In the final quarter the Airman found the hoop. Millard scored field goals galore for the Airmen, and at one time grought the score within four points of the Weber guint. But time ran out on the Hill Fielders, and when the final gun sounded, Weber was ahead 70-63. Braziel was high man on the floor with 19 counters. Bob Suhic was close behind with 18. Scalon connected for 14, and Wright, Nish, Millard and Borges potted 11 valuables apiece. Falrchild Air Base was supposed to play Westminister at 7:30, but Falrchild never showed up. Weber split its squad to play the Parsons. Westminister triumphed 65-58. cats clip hill air base 75-50 The Weber Cagers traveled to Hill Field for a win of 75-50 against the sky boys. Coach Swenson split the squad to give each player a chance to show their "stuff". Friday night the claw paws thoroughly trounced the fly boys. Curt Van Alfen led the scoring parade with 18 points. Gary Jesperson followed with 14 and Bob Subic and Don Nish followed with 10 each. The first half was close due to the frigid shooting of the wildcats. When the second half started, Subic and Van Alfen hit some quick ones and the Wildcats were never headed after the rout. Saturday night the Hill Fielders were up for vengeance, and early in the game pulled away from the college boys. Weber got hot behind some sharp shooting of Lew Wright and finally overtook the home team and went into the lead that was never challenged. The scoring wasn't as high as the preceding night, but nearly every one got into the scoring column with Lew Wright topping the Wildcat roster with 16. Lefty Plumber led the fly boys with 26 points, hitting from every place on the floor. Following the second game, Coach Swenson announced his traveling squad which he will take to Texas with him.
