Today's question is a local issue: "Should the Faculty Be Expected to Turn Out as a body to the Student Functions?" Pro Plain Abe Lincoln Honesty! We've been shocked before. Starling events have been commonplace in our lives, but we were still jarred. When the recent backetball "fix" scandal in collegiate basketball circles broke we were affected. We were thousands of miles away from New York's Madison Square Garden and never have and probably never will see any of the men .involved. Nevertheless, that tragic event has uncovered a dangerous weapon, the sights of which are zeroed in on us, the students of America. The debris from that explosion hasn't settled yet, and in its wake other charges are bursting daily. Officials of the RFC have been called in on the carpet because of questionable judgment and action on their part. Gambling syndicates are being exposed. Public officials have even fallen prey to the inticings of underworld bribery. Some trusted men in public service have yielded to unrighteous principles and now they must pay the price in money and time and reputation. The same subterfuge and currying of favor that was used to entice the men involved may sometime be used on us. After all, we too must climb up the road of life and become entrusted with positions of responsibility. And there will only be one thing that we will be able to use effectively in countering this obnoxious weed. That thing? Honesty. Just plain Abraham Lincoln honesty. Not only tomorrow, but now. Here ! Today ! Plain honesty ! . C. T. M. For STATIONERY, GREETING-CARDS and GRADUATION ANNOUNCEMENTS ... Before I begin to dwell on this rather touchy subject let me briefly explain the viewpoint with which this question will be given consideration by me. Long Hours Who doesn't realize that a teacher puts in many long hard hours into their profession? Granted, that long hours- of correcting papers, examinations to be written and many other aspects of teaching take a great deal of time. This in all probability is the greatest single factor for lack of the presence of faculty members at student activities. This being realized, let me look upon the question in the viewpoint of should the faculty dwell in student activities IF they had the time. Should Know Students We'll all agree, I'm sure that it is sedulous for a professor to know his students. This has been common knowledge with the profession for a long time. Now, how can this be arranged? By sitting home at in the evening when he knows there is to be a mammoth sleigh ride party for the faculty and students? By correcting papers when the big dance is being held? (To which incidently all teachers receive free tickets) or by reading a book on the night of a championship game? Point One Taking the above into consideration, we might state that Point One in favor of teachers taking part in school activities is that it helps them in becoming acquainted with the pupils. Point Two Point Two It allows the instructor the relaxation they need after a day in the class room. No one can profess to go through the same old grind every day without some form of change. Everyone needs relaxation and student activities provides and excellent means for this. Of course these points builds up into rather a flimsy argument because of the IF clause I pushed into the first of this article. Are They Rushed? Let us dwell on this viewpoint for a minute. . . . Are teachers rushed for time? Have any of you fellows ever looked into the boys dressing room and saw faculty members preparing to go up into the handball courts to play? Surely they are not too pressed for time if they can go play every afternoon. Also, some of the instructors on the college staff hold down part time jobs after school in the evening. It would be superficial to mention these names in this column but it is probably common knowledge anyway. Surely these members are not so poor they need to hold (down two jobs. By Ann Lund It has been noised around this campus that faculty members have not been supporting student, extracurricular activities which include dances, concerts, games, and dramatic presentations. Schedules Full It is a well-known fact, both on and off the Weber college campus, that the instructors of Weber are not only teaching their full quota of da classes but also spend many evenings a week teaching night classes. Most of these instructors spend many hours a week preparing lecture material and doing research. All this plus a great deal of work expended on these and study for the purpose of acquiring additional educational degrees is quite a load on any person's back. Teachers, Human Beings It is also a well-known fact that teachers are human beings (no matter what evidence We hear to the contrary), and being such, require a certain amount of diversion and relaxation. Could students who are carrying eighteen or twenty-one hours credit (and this pretty mild compared to the work expected of our faculty members) find sufficient relaxation at a faculty banquet? The answer most logically is "no." In the same way, teachers have their own tastes in entertainment, and usually these center around their families with whom they may seldom be able to spend an entire evening. With so little free time, they should hardly be expected to spend what little time they do have in further persuing the activities of the college. Activities Pleasant We cannot deny that our student activities are usually pleasant, well-planned, and, effective. And should a faculty member wish to participate, he should be made as welcome as any student, but should he prefer the company and entertainment of his family and non-faculty friends, he should definitely not, in my estimation, be expected to attend a Friday night dance in preference to a good movie or simple domestic surroundings, especially merely to support and further the school spirit and morale of supposedly adult individuals who, by all laws of society are able to care for themselves. Weber Site for '52 Cage Tournament Weber College will again be the site of the division IV basketball tournament for the 1952 season, according to Milt Mecham, division vice president. Reed K. Swenson, Weber coach and again national president of the Junior College Athletic Association, commented that, "It is a great honor to have the tournament at Weber College again for the fourth time, and the people of the community should recognize the fact and support the program a little better." Ogden and Weber College have been the home of the tournament for the past three years and for the same three years Weber College has taken the division championship and represented division IV at the national tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas. Letter to the Editor Dear Editor: Now that Jim Bonner has left school some of us are afraid that conditions at the C.I. will become unbearable. He was the conscience of the school, and what will become of us now? We can already tell what has happened to the coffee. Shep is bottling it and selling it in pint bottles to the biology lab for use on the dogfish. They eat it up. Lou Ann has a goodunder-the-counter business using it for ink. Three Parker 51's were eaten away last week just the tempered steel clips remained. In Jim's absence I suggest that only pens costing under five dollars be filled at Lou Ann's concession. All the others better use Watermann's. She has the more permanent fluid (unreachable, washable, cleaned, dried, sized, blended, and waxed) but most of us do not write for posterity. We are all temporal beings,' even the philosophers among us. But sometimes I think Shep's coffee is an attempt to make us more temporary than even we sinners deserve. Yours truly, Mr. Coffee Nerves Yipee Pro! So taking all into consideration I feel that IF the instructor has the time he should join in the activities because it affords the opportunity of becoming acquainted and also affords relaxation. Therefore, I definately feel that "FACULTY MEMBERS SHOULD JOIN IN STUDENTACTIVITIES". Ogden Blue Print & Supply Co.
