Show Page 2 SIGNPOST April 17, 1959 Editorial Throughout history, men have always lcnged for and desired the right of universal manhood sufferage. This was evident as far back as ancient Greece, the cradle of our democracy. Up through the ages men have given their lives to preserve this privilege, and now it has been taken too much for granted. Complacency has set in, and people do not realize the power that one single vote holds. Through abstention of voting, the principle of majority rule disappears and is replaced with minority rule or government of the "clique." It is evident to most level-headed people that this type of government is dangerous to our society. It paralyzes initiative and muffles the voice of the people. Weber's Situation Is Typical This dilemma is characterized by the situation at Weber College. When a concerned legislature and an inspired administration work hard to achieve Weber's four year status, it would logically follow that students should take the initiative and exercise their natural right. As more and more independents cast their votes, the narrow views of the political blocs and machines must bow down to the will of the majority. If educated people do not vote, what next? In the primary election only 600 out of approximately stand 2000 votes were cast. If only about 30 of college students vote, the democratic form of government is too good for them. What they need is a despotism where people are fed their morning political pablum. ANYTHING GOES ou Too Can Complexes improve in Two Hays by Kathy Kittock Because so much emphasis is placed on developing a sharp,- witty, cheerful, fascinating, exciting, sincere, personality this article is intended to help those with average, boring, dull, dead, lifeless personalities. The best way to overcome your present dull personality is to get rid of the old you. Burn your clothes. Break up and sell your furniture in your room for firewood.Ignore your old friends who you feel think that they are better than you are, and start making new friends with people who you consider to be "lesser" than yourself like your little brother and sister. Too Many Complexes Now the real problem comes about changing you. This sounds easy, but it is not easy. You have entirely too many complexes, anxieties, and frustrations to do away with in one night. So, take two (2) nights!! The first night write clown a list of all the people you know. Make three columns of names and head them, "stand," and just put a mark above the column of those people you don't know about. Pick out all the good qualities in those people and practice them. For instance, you might like the way one of your ex-friends winks. Practice winking. You now have the first quality you would like to possess you now have one eye closing and opening smoothly. You're on the way to being that sharp, witty, cheerful, fascinating, exciting, sincere personality that you have always dreamed of being! Learn to Deal and Mingle The second night you have a "lab." Instead of reading books on personality, you actually practice real life-like situations. Through these situations you can learn how to associate, deal, and mingle with people. For instance, you might- want to develop the ability of carrying on a conversation. The best thing to do is to pick a number at random from the phone book and don't disclose your real name. Instead, choose a -fake common name like can't Clorephus Ingleton. question Tell them that you saw their "Weber College Signpost Student Union Building Phone Weber College, Ext. 232 Managing Editor - Robert Wood Assistant Editor , LeRoy Yorgason Sports Editor - - John Hale Business Manager - - Margaret Anderson Reporters: Grant Messerly, Francia Oborn, Mike Monson, Carol Blanken, Mjke Parker, Kathy Kittock, Gaylene Knight, Barbara Henry, Carolyn Heiner, Marlene Nelson, Brent Wilcox, John Hutchinson, Susan Browp, Barbara Profaizer, Mitzi Kawaguchi, Parviz Iranfar. Board Hears Plea Fei Weekly Paper The important issues of the April l.'ith meeting of the board of control were issues that will soon play a vital role in the growth anil development of Weber College. President Jim Iluist welcomed I.. ('. Evans to the session and turned the time over to him for a discussion of the possibility of Weber's Signpost being issued weekly. Mr. Evans stressed that, we need a weekly addition not only for literary reasons but to unify Weber and build student enthusiasm. He estimated that the current yearly budget of the paper with an increase of $xr,(, would cover the cost of weekly edition. The remainder of the revenue would be gained by selling ad space. This report was of great interest to the members and further investigation will be made into its possibilities. phone number in the phone book and that you think they have a very intriguing phone number. Always flatter the person on the other end of the phone. They'll talk longer to you n you do. However, don't be like one certain man that tried this. He, by mistake, called the time operator and talked to the time record for fifteen minutes before he realized what he was doing. The only advantage here, is that you don't have to worry about her hanging up on you. Also Exciting Another exciting experience is performing your hidden talent. The person who develops a good personality often times has a talent that gives him self confidence. For example, if you can sing let others know about it. Ask to sing on every assembly that comes a-long. If this doesn't seem to go over too well, change your talent. One talent is as good as aonther. In other words, if you find that your talent is picking peas, pick them! As a pea picker you might develop your accuracy and swiftness of hand movement. You can be the best pea picker in the state of Utah. Through self - confidence comes more self - confidence. Someday, if you make a "hit" picking peas, you might go on to bigger and better things like picking beets! So, in summary, practice the desired qualities that you see in others, develop a talent, and don't read foolish books on personality. Instead use your time practicing real life-like situations. If All Else Fails If none of the above techniques ! work, you'll just have to learn to live with your dull, average, bor-I ing, dead, lifeless personality. Cer-I tain defense mechanisms can luck ily bs developed, however. For instance, when wishing to remove yourself from a large crowd of people, just fall on the floor and put your hands over your head while you yell "Air Raid" in the loudest voice you can muster. However, if this intense shyness persists, it might be well to find another defense mechanism. If you become too dependent on this defense mechanism, you may have to go through life in utter terror lying prone on the floor yelling "Air Raid!" 200 Fellci Ready For Grads Two hundred fellowships for graduate study in 1.1 foreign countries will be offered by foregin governments and universities through the Institute of International Education for the academic year ltil'.lt-ill.
