Show NEWS VIEWS Coaches Instill flew Grid Attitud By Jim Freston Well, it's that time of year again when the athletes retreat from the cold football field to the shelter of the gymnasium. The season changes from fall to winter and competition changes from football to basketball. The change is welcome for many; they would rather forget the past Weber College grid season in favor of high hopes for a winning court squad. There are others, however, who rather regret seeing the football season draw to a close simply because they dislike seeing a successful period end. This writer is one of those outspoken individuals who definitely feels that football at Weber this fall was successful. Of course, I too anticipate another great basketball season at Weber but I also feel that the past grid season was not the failure it was made out to be by spectators who evaluate team and season only by points' scored for and against Weber. In the won-lost department, football at Weber was anything, but successful this fall- But more important to Weber in the near future, a new attitude was instilled in the athletes who are to represent Weber in grid wars next fall. It took a whole season to get the message across to the boys and there were many hard feelings and bitter words in getting the job done. At one juncture in the season the traveling squad for a coming game was made up of "The boys who want to play football." Those who, in the coach's opinion, hadn't produced in scrimmages the week of the game were left home despite their size and experience. New Attitude Is Introduced The above mentioned method of selecting the traveling squad was the tipoff that a new attitude for athletes of future teams is being cultured by coaches Mecham and Rhead. This attitude, in a few words, is: either play football or get out. The day of the goldbrick-ing "football player" is over at Weber College. The freshmen of this year's squad are aware of what is expected of them next fall. They are to get in shape, work hard at practice, and during games and scrimmages they are to play the game the way it was meant to be played rough and tough with emphasis on hard tackling, clean blocking, unquestionable sportsmanship and above all the will to win. Sophs Had it Easy This year's sophmores had a taste of soft life when they rubbed elbows with last year's second year boys who were nearly all choice candidates for the "Top goldbricker of 1955" award. Perhaps none of the boys won this distinction but they certainly did try and were rather successful too- Some of this laziness evidently rubbed off on our sophomores because when the get-to-work attitude took over, the second year boys were first to whine and kept on whining while the opposition rolled up points. Our freshmen know what is expected of them next fall and they know their competition (especially from a prone view.) They also know they can't beat the giants without playing like giants themselves. They'll do it too because when the first game rolls around next fall, Weber College uniforms will be worn only by men who have a sincere desire to play good football. No, the 1955 football season wasn't a failure it was a beginning a beginning of a long line of football teams which will be mentally able to physically cope with the nation's best jr. college teams. TRYOUT SIDESHOTS Active Ray, 'Knute' Test Cagers By Larry Tomlinson In his first year at Weber Ray Rhead has really taken the bit in his teeth. Not content to assist in football and basketball, Ray is reported to be the man handling baseball as well as his present post as intramural director. It seemed strange to see this well-coordinated athlete who looks, thinks and talks like a footballer chasing the guards and centers around on hardwood rather than a turf. The way in which both Rhead and Head Coach Swenson handled the mass of sprawling, over-anxious basketball tryouts amazes me. Numbering close to forty, the first week hopefuls were regimented into one position and situation after another with little or noconfusion-After 22 years in the coaching ranks Mentor Swenson has reduced his trade to mechanical perfection comparable to that of an IBM calculator. Test of Talents The "little man" managed in the space of two hours to run every aspirant through one or more different process determined to test Free Swim From 4 Hit 5 Every school day except Thursday, the Weber College swimming pool is open from 4 to f p.m. free of charge- "This is only for students, however," said prexy Ray Humphreys, "but to this date few students have taken advantage of the free hour." According to Ray if more of the swimmers do not show an interest then the privilege will have to be withdrawn. The climax to this trip will be a December 19th tilt against Comp-ton JC of California in a "Little Baseball," benefit at Elko, Nevada. Among these twenty are eight returning lettermen from last year's fine team around which Coaches Swenson and Ray Rhead expect to weave another ICAC contender. Garth and Marv Hansen top the big boys at 6-6 with five others standing in at 6-4. Smallest member of the aggregation is diminutive letter-man Gary Jensen at 5-8. "I can't single out any specific player or players as outstanding yet," said the veteran mentor; "but so far it looks good."
