Show Page 4 SIGNPOST Wednesday, November 24, 1948 WILDCATS WIN OVER BKONCS 27-0 Wildcats Meet Mavericks In Final Football Battle Highlighting the Mesa Thanksgiving Day program, is the game between Weber's wildcats and Mesa's mavericks. Weber college gridders will leave Wednesday morning on their long jaunt to Grand Junction, Colorado, where they will try to roll up another score like they did last year in Ogden. The wildcats ran over the Mesa boys charging and passing at will to bang out a 39-7 victory.Mesa barely nosed out a 6-7 decision over the local boys in '46 and gave the wildcats one of their three losses that year. Incidentally, Messa ran over BAC by a somewhat similar score that Weber did. It was 24-0. Despite several injured players, Coach Milt Mecham is confident of victory. He commented that his boys played excellent ball against Compton and BAC, and that if this would continue, Thursday's game would go to the 'cat team. Injured in games were Felt, with a bad knee, Ambler, cracker ribs, and Ellison, a shoulder injury. This game is the last of the season, and should go over to the local boys by a colorful score. Starting the game will be: Rhead and Gardner at ends; Gramberg and Tullis at tackles; Hamblin at center; Miyasato in the quarterback spot with Kessler and Baird at halfbacks. Schmalz will occupy the fullback slot. DISTINCTION and LONG WEAR THIS STURDY BROGUE Your steps will be sure and firm throughout the miles of wear Fortune has built into these brawny beauties. SHOES FOR MEN A PRE-REMODELING SPECIAL Keith's Korner By Keith Hunt The curtain comes down on a rather up-and-down gridiron season for Weber college when the Wildcats take the field tomorrow in the Mesa JC Homecoming game at Grand Junction, Colo. Mecham and his boys are still suffering from their wounds, inner and outer, of the recent Pacific coast massacres with Compton and Glendale. During their layover in LA between games, Coach Milt happened to stop at a drugstore in a rather shady section of town. There, perched on top of that "certain" counter always found in such drug stores, was a sign with large letters reading: "If you want babies, That's your business. If you don't, That's ours." (The things that go on in those large cities.) The scores of those two California games are no indication of the type of football played or the effort put forth by our boys. A couple of outstanding men, and a few good breaks can really create such a lop-sided score. Pitting a school the size of Weber against one of those coast two-year schools is thenear-equivalent of tossing BYU to the mercy of the University of Michigan. A 60-18 score in that game would be considered a fine showing by the "V." Compton college alone has an enrollment nearly one and one-half times that of the University of Utah. Now the question may arise, why do our coaches, knowing these $6.38 MEN'S STORE Wildcat Profiles One of the sparks on last year's eleven, Big Jim Hamblin appeared among the starters of Friday's game against BAC at Cedar City. His home town is Roy, Utah and he played for Weber high school in '46. He 'tilts' the scales at 190 and measures up to around 6 feet tall. Jim works every minute he is in there, helping pave the way for touchdowns. He realizes the Importance of snapping the ball back and concienciously makes sure of his accuracy. things, chart contests with these JC goliaths? The old adage that a brave dog never stays in his own backyard, fits this situation perfectly. In one season of athletic competition with the coast, more publicity and goodwill are spread for Weber than could be accomplished in five years of talking and letter-writing.The Associated Press account of the Weber-Compton game reported that the locals uncorked one of the finest passing attacks seen in California JC circles this year. Regardless of the running score of that affair, after that kind of publicity, we can hardly say that we completely lost the game. Now, with football fading out, basketball looms as the next big attraction on the athletic agenda, and again the highlight of the schedule is the holiday series with the coast schools. Weber has anything but a small basketball reputation to defend in Cal. Placing fourth in the Compton and possessing the most valuable player In the tourney are big boosts. The wildcats blasted all hopes for BAC in their quest for the championship spot and left it open for the Southern Idaho College of Education. Had the Branch Ags won the clash, they would have clinched the ICAC title without question. Occasional Fumble Brisk weather caused both squads to fumble occasionally but despite this handicap, the 'cats were hot on passes and their strong line ran rough shod over the little ags. The local squad made one touchdown in each of the first two periods and one extra point. Critten- don mastered the situation by making three conversions during the game. First Tally The opening score for the wildcats came on a pass from Jim Miyasato to halfback Bill Kessler, who caught the ball on the goal line and stepped over. Miyasato failed to convert with the extra. In the second period Bill Kessler skirted the end and went over standing up again. Herb Critten-don added to the score with his conversion. Perfect Passing Miyasato's deadly throwing accuracy gave the home team the last two touchdowns with four minutes left to play. His pitches to Richard Maybray and Ray Rhead clicked and they both rang the bell. Crittendon kicked perfectly and made the two extra points. Weber Ends Rhead, Gardner, Crittendon, Henry. The game was certainly the most thrilling of the year as both teams were keyed up for it and some of the finest football seen in intra-murals was displayed in the 32-minutes of fireworks. First half play was almost entirely inside Alpha Rho territory as Sigma pressed toward their goal line time and again. But every time Sigma got inside the 15 yard line, Alpha Rho braced and thwarted the attack. Loses on Downs Sigma carried the ball deep into Alpha Rho territory again early in the third quarter, but lost the ball on downs. After being held for three downs, Alpha Rho punted to Lloyd Neville, who returned it 45 yards to the end zone to make the score 6-0 for Sigma. As the game progressed into the fourth quarter, Alpha Rho carried the ball into Sigma territory for the first time, but Sigma took over and punted out. Alpha Rho resumed the attack and drove to Sigma's goal line and scored with only 45 seconds to play. Sensational catches by Edson featured the drive. Overtime Sigma clinched the game in the overtime by piling up 20 yards to Alpha Rho's two. Dorm clinched consolation championship by waxing Pheonix 18-0 behind some beautiful pass catches by Stan McAllister and Excelsior took third place by beating Vikings 12-6.
