PROMISING PROFESSION Thirty Weber Students Plan Nursing Careers By Boyd Knowles One of the important but little known components on the Weber college campus are the student nurses who are studying at Weber college in connection with the Dee Hospital. At the present rfime there are thirty student registered at Weber college in connection with this training. The nursing program is based on. a three year program, comprising 123 quarter credit hours of college work. If a bachelor of science degree is desired the student may enter upon an additional nine months' work at the completion of her nursing schooling. Basic Subjects The first two quarters of the student nurse's training is spent studying basic subjects. These subjects are given at Weber college. Such courses as English, orientation, Chemistry, etc., are studied during these two basic quarters. Upon completion of her first two quarters, the student nurse is transferred to the University of Utah college of nursing for her remaining ten quarters of training. In order that social activity will not be neglected, a student body organization has been organized at the hospital. The student body officers are Evelyn Olson, president; Thelma Thompson, vice president, and Sharon Barnett, secretary. These student body officers schedule some type of social activity for the student body organization each month. Outstanding among their activities is their midwinter formal dancing party in January, the Junior Prom, and the Senior Reception. Affiliation One of the outstanding features of the nursing course at the Dee Hospital is their psychiatric affiliation with the mental hospital at Warm Springs, Montana. This affiliation gives each student a chance to go to Warm Springs for three months during her nursing training to give her experience in the handling of mental patients, and to further equip her for the nursing profession. The nursing staff at the Dee Hospital is also contemplating an affiliation with the Tuberculosis Hospital here in Ogden to give each student six weeks training in the care of tuberculosis patients. Capping Exercises At the end of six months training, if the hospital staff feels that she is adapted to nursing and that she has completed her work satisfactorily, the student nurse undergoes one of the most impressive ceremonies of her career. The "Capping Exercise" gives each student the privilege of wearing the nursing cap and to participate in working with the patients in the hospital. In making an appeal for more students to go into nursing training, Mrs. Lucile Taylor Bruerton, superintendent ' of nurses at the Dee Hospital, stated that "the nursing profession has as much to offer as any other profession upon which a girl may embark. It has been estimated that there are at least 60,000 positions open for students who enter upon this training. Salaries are comparable with those of any other profession, and working conditions are, in many cases better than those' of comparable professions. Women who are qualified are urged to avail themselves of the opportunities in nursing." Accreditation Delay Noted by Dixon Accreditation of an upper division curriculum for a four-year Weber college cannot be obtained immediately, Weber College President Henry A. Dixon said Thursday. He emphasized that the lower division would retain the high accreditation rank it now holds, but upper division accreditation would not be given until successful operation of at least one year has been completed. Second Year Accreditation by the Northwest Association of Education could probably be obtained during the second year, he said. He stated that the college already has 16 per cent of its instructors with PH.D. degrees, with the possibility of 20 per cent having PH.D. degrees within the next two years. PH.D. Instructors The four-year status would require 21 additional instructors. Most of these additional faculty members would hold Ph. D. degrees, thereby allowing all upper division students to be taught by Ph.D. people. This would also bring the Ph.D. percentage well above the accreditation requirements.Curriculum development could also be accomplished within the two-year period, President Dixon concluded.
