TOURNAMENTS Eight Teams on Deck For Mountain Tournev By Richard Rounds All is In readiness for the Rocky Mountain Regional Basketball tournament to be held in Weber's gymnasium, starting Thursday, March 3. Eight high-geared teams representing Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, and Idaho will be entered in the tournament which will run through Saturday, March 5. Seven teams have already been selected to participate. They are Boise from Idaho; Snow, Dixie, Weber and Carbon from Utah and Mesa, La Junta and Ft. Lewis from Colorado. Trinidad, Colorado may also enter in the tourney. Prizes Awarded Champions, runner-up, and consolation winners will receive awards for their efforts in the scramble for a berth in the National Junior college tournament held at Hutchinson, Kansas, March 22 through 26. The winner of the Weber tournament will receive a team trophy and 12 gold basketballs for their feats. The runners-up wil receive a team trophy and 12 silver basketballs and the consolation winner will receive a team trophy. Milton Mecham, wildcat football coach, is the tournament director this year. Committee chairmen of the tournament are: dressing rooms, Harry Burchell; housing, William Stratford; press, Al Warden; public address, Laurence Burton; timing and scoring, Dean Gardner; tickets, Art De Boer; trainer, Steven; reception committee, Dean Gardner, chairman, Paul Huish, Ernie Miner, and Johnny Gaz. The tournament should provide some of the best basketball seen around these parts in recent years and should prove to be a great success if students and fans get behind it properly. Weber cagers dropped two games :"0 the Boise broncos last week end, by scores of 74-57 the first night and 40-54 the second, losing first place in the northern Intermoun-'ain Collegiate Athletic conference. Present standings for the conference show Weber with a 5-5 win and lose setup. Ricks and Boise share top honors for the division with a tie. for first place. Broncos Lead After a hotly contested first half, the Boise broncos pulled away from a slim four-point lead at intermission time and really went to town in the first game. The broncos held their lead through the remainder of the game and came out victorious, 74-57. Weber Fights Back Saturday's tangle proved to be a different story however, under the pressing attack of wildcat fury, the lead changed hands several times during the game, and consequently worried the Idahoans considerably. , In the last minutes of the game, plenty of determination was shown by the wildcats to gain possession of the ball but they failed to shrink the span of a mere four points. The final horn sounded with the scoreboard showing 50 to 54. Wildcat Profiles SHSSif This week's personality belongs to none other than the most popular buy in the school, Mr. Collegiate . . . Thair Bud Blackburn. Bud plays guard on this year's team. As college players go, Bud is a shortie, but he makes up for this and more with a lot of fight, accurate shooting and sheer determination.After graduating from Ogden high in 1946 where he spent two years on the varsity basketball team, he joined Uncle Sam's army. He filled 16 months in the service, part of this time in Japan. An enrollment at Weber came next. School Supply Headquarters 416 - 26th Street Team to Spend Six Days Away In Big Invitational Contest Weber college's slope artists will be entertained this weekend along with San Francisco city college and Sacramento college in a big invitational meet, held at Mile Hi resort, 23 miles east of Sonora, which is about 30 miles from Modasto. Wildcat skiers left Wednesday-f morning in the college daschund, accompanied by their coach, Olympic star, Corey Engen and Milt Mecham, faulty advisor. Their first stop was Reno, Nev., Wednesday night and they pulled into Modesto last night. Team Members Captaincy of the Weber team is held by Dick Mitchell, one of Utah's several promising skiers. Dick captured top honors in the slalom and downhill trials and placed second in the jump and cross-country trials. Fred Montmorency, one of Snow Basin's outstanding skiers, won the cross-country event, placed second in the slalom and third in jumps. Fred is expected to well earn his letter in skiing this year. Lou Holston, from Long Beach, Calif., will be one of the boys most likely to surprise, due to his day after day practice on the slalom course at the basin. Lou is also excellent in the jump and crosscountry. He is consistent and should collect many points. Keith Bringhurst, another promising local lad, will help bring points to the team through his efforts In downhill racing and jumping. Keith worked for second place in the downhill trials and did very well in the jumps. Bob Van Wagnen has been quite inactive this year, but surprised us by placing high in thecross-country and slalom trials. He is expected to do well. Intramurals By Richard Round Leading all the way, the Dormitory A team, lead by Stan McAllister, trimmed a strong faculty team by a score of 38-24 to capture the intramural basketball championship before a large crowd in the gymnasium Tuesday. The game was closely contested throughout the first half and the faculty tied the score shortly after the second half opened before he dorm boys took over and turned the game into a rout. Stan McAllister led the dorm scorers with 15 points, most of which came from long set shots from beyond the foul circle. The big job of the day was for the dorm to hold Dean Gardner, ace scorer of the faculty down. Great defensive play by the dorm held him to 11 points. The victory will be a big step for the dorm toward the school intramural championships.The faculty made a clean sweep of the squash championships, copping both singles and doubles. Dean Gardner played singles for the faculty and Monte De Boer and Pat Reilly formed the doubles team. Viking and Alpha Rho were runners-up in singles and doubles respectively in squash. - The team is expected to be back Tuesday evening. .
