By Bob Jones Weber's purple Wildcats used their entire squad in handily trouncing the University of Mexico Pumas 75-55 in the first of a two game series January 23. The two teams battled on fairly even terms the first half, Weher going off the fioor at the half holding a five point average, 33-28. It was a tired University of Mexico team that trotted off the floor after the intermission and early in the third quarter it was apparent that Weber was a shoo-in, although little Carlos Bru and agile Luis Labistida made the Pumas anever-present threat. Co-Captains Kenny Berrett and Frank Hazen gleaned 12 points a-piece to top the Wildcat scoring although they played less than a half. Wayne Cottle, frosh ace, followed with 11 points and was a standout performer of the second half. Carlos Bru, Puma forward, scraped up 18 points for top scoring honors. Bru drove in for lots of close-ins and was very clever under the basket. Labistida followed Bru with 12 point, and amazed the crowd with his accurate hook-shots. The Pumas played a smooth ball-handling game and looked alright in the shooting department but their downfall was a laxity on de fense, as time after time their defense was caught out of position by the fast breaking Weberites. By Keith Hunt The purple-clad Wildcats made it two straight against the Olympic-bound University of Mexico from Mexico City by notching up a 77-62 win last Sat urday night at the Ogden high school gymnasium. The Weber first team showed en tirely too much class for the game, but harmless, Mexicans. The Wild cat reserves, whom Coach Reed Swenson used as much as possible, proved to be an equal or better match' for the Pumas. Swenson used his entire 15-man squad in the lop-sided victory. Weber grabbed an early 17-2 lead over Mexico and from then on out the first-stringers were never troubled. Coach Swenson shifted his number two team in the second quarter and the Mexicans rapidly foegan closing the gap before the varsity aces returned to rescue the flailing jayvees. Bewildered by Speed The Pumas seemed rather bewil dered by the blazing Weber fast- break., type of offense, as in com parison to their own slow, deliber ate, accurate-passing system. Weber's one-two scoring punch, Berrett and Hazen, again pulled through to top the scoring column with 21 and 14 points, respectively. Elongated Wilbur Braithwaite dunked in 10 counters, displaying some of his outstanding 1947 form. Ray Malmrose, number two center, also clicked for 10 points. Pena, heralded forward of the Mexs, connected for 18 points to lead Puma scorers. He was not far ahead of Grimaldi and Navarro, with 15 and 14, respectively. Used Seven Men. Much credit must be given to the Mexicans, for only seven men were used in both contests to bear the Weber attack. Much favorable comment was awarded to the Pumas regarding their stamina and fine sportsmanship throughout the contests.
