Garners Basketball Lead Wildcats Eke Out Win Over Broncs, Whip Flyers to Grab Top Spot By Jerry Peart Top spot in conference basketball standings was taken over by the Weber college Wildcats as they notched their fourth straight victory in as many league starts Friday night, downing the highly-touted and previously unbeaten Broncos from Branch Agricultural college, 47-45, in a hard-fought tussle before a capacity crowd in the Ogden high school gymnasium. Soon after the opening gam had-, sounded, Weber was clicking at a fast pace and jumped into a commanding lead at the end of the first canto. Throughout the second quarter the Wildcats score began mounting steadily as they continually made most of their shots count, and as the first half ended, the Broncos found themselves on the tail end of a 28-15 score. Broncos Make Second Half Drive When the teams took the court to start the second half, BAC was a rejuvenated squad and all through the third and final quarters of play, the Broncos began hitting their stride and rapidly narrowed the gap. Weber found themselves facing a much stronger quint than the one they faced in the first half. The Wildcats lead, which at one time was of comfortable margin was slowly running out as the game progressed. Both teams were hard-pressed in the final seconds of play and as the game ended Weber was on top with a two-point lead which won them the ball game. Co-captain Ken Berrett, capable Weber center, was the standout performer of the evening. The hard-working Berrett garnered 20 points as he blasted the hoop from all angles with uncanny accuracy. Eton Jespersen, all-conference forward, was next in line as he racked up 17 counters. Ldndy Nedl-son, colorful left-handed forward was just about the whole show for the Branch five as he tanked 20 markers for the losers. Weber Swimmers Set Meet With University of Utah Centering their attention on the coming meets the Wildcat swimmers are working out daily. They will play host to the University of Utah, Feb. 14. A return engagement is scheduled with Bear River high school Feb. 21. The Weber team will journey to Salt Lake for another go with the U. of U. members, Feb. 28. In March they will take part in three triangular meets, with Utah State Agricultural college and University of Utah. The latter part of the month will be given over to water polo, of which the schedule is not yet complete. Although their average of wins and losses isn't the best the Weber paddlers are definitely on the up grade. Dropping the first meet of the season to USAC, 43 to 23, they next submerged Bear River high school 50-30, the Weber team taking every first place in this meeting. A return engagement with the USAC at Logan high school pool was held last Friday. The Farmers once more won, 47-28. However, Pete Lafon gained revenge in beating J. Powers of the USAC in the 220 free style. This makes one all for these boys and their next meeting should be one of the main features. Results of Latest Weber-AC Meet 300-yard Medley relay Won by Weber, 3:32.8 200-yard, Free style Lafon (W; J. At the intermission Weber clung to a 26-21 lead. In the second half however, the fast-breaking Weber five caught fire and began playing much better ball, both offensively and defensively than they did in the earlier part of the game and gradually pulled way out in front as the battle neared its ending. When the final seconds of play ran out, the high-scoring Weberltes had tucked another game under their belts and the visitors from Dixie found themselves on the short end of a 63-42 score. Berrett, Jespersen, Hazen, Big Guns Weber's big guns, Ken Berrett, Don Jespersen and Frank Hazen, were the 1-2-3 scoring punch for the Wildcats. Berrett was again the king-pin as he tanked 19 points for high-scoring honors. Jespersen was close behind with 16 counters, and Hazen, whose floor game was of a standout calibre, bucketed 14 markers. Verl Langston, rugged center, was practically the entire Dixie attack as he racked in 15 points. Ken McDonald, the league's leading scorer up until game time, was held to six points. Weber's re serves played the entire fourth quarter.
