Show V Sweetheart Ball of Excelsior Is Set For February 13 Formal Dance Js First Task Of New President Arrangements for Excelsior club's annual dance, the Sweetheart ball, are rapidly nearing completion, with Fob. 13 set as the final date for the affair Photographs of the seven coed candidates for Excelsior's Sweetheart have been taken by Fred Rabe, and are being rushed through the final stages by developing and printing. Each year Excelsior club, sponsors a Sweetheart ball and Sweetheart contest. Glamorous photos are taken of the women judged by Excelsior men to be among the most appealing on the campus. These photos are then sent to a nationally known personality who has agreed hi forehand to choose the most beautiful girl. His choice of girls is kept secret until the night of the dance, when the president will open the envelope and reveal the name of the winner. Custom Resumed This custom had been discontinued during, the war but with the reorganization of men s clubs will be started again. Several years ago Don Ameche, motion picture star, chose the Sweetheart. Secretary Paul Vernieu relates, that, while Several offers have been made, nothing will be certain until answers from several other letters are received. At the last meeting seven candidates were chosen from among the campus beauties. After balloting for nearly three hours, these choices were finally made. Marilyn Robinson, Pauline Edwards, Shirley Chandler, Jean-ette Dursteller, Gloria Parry, Marian Hickman, and Elaine Smith. Committee Reports At the last meeting committee chairmen reported very satisfactory progress. It seems that the game started quite ordinarily, but Weber hoys got off on the wrong foot when they argued about one of the early decisions, a forecase of what was to follow. From then on the refs were either asleep or were deliberately driving it into the Wildcats. Jesperson was body blocked and hurled into the stands several times. Once when he was dribbling in the corner two farmer boys hit him and he flew, I mean flew, into the bleachers. After abut 15 minutes when he had untangled himself and gotten back on the floor, the referee called a double foul. With the score 22-21 for Weber big Ed Martin went out on fouls. A Dixie man had been in the clear driving for the basket so Ed tacked him to save two points. He says that he had been on the floor so much that that time he had wanted company, so he hit the boy hard and low. It has been said that when Jesperson jumps for a ball he seems to uncoil from a mighty spring, then hurtle into the air. As he is up there above everyone he usually looks around and spots his receiver so that when he hits the floor he doesn't have to waste any time. Things were so bad in that game the he could only jump about eight inches off the floor that was very good though, considering the fact that he always had at least two men on each arm when he jumped. The small boys like Garner and Thome" were the ones who really took a beating though. In an ordinary game they have a tough time but in that battle royal they were kicked, gouged, crushed, tripped, and thrown 40 feet if they even looked like they Ace Photo Service 328 Twenty-fourth Street Odgen, Utah PRINTING AND ENLARGING EVERYTHING PHOTOGRAPHIC President Crank Read,, iormer army flyer, is now president of Kx-celslor, and is in enarge of arrangements for the annual Sweetheart hall. aminer has been secured for full length pictures of the prospective sweethearts. This dance organization is under the direction of the new president, Frank Read, vice-president, Bud Sorenson, and secretary-treaurer, Paul Vernieu.were going to shoot Now don't get the idea that our players were taking this calmly, they weren't at all. After the half they started to dish it out. I don't think the man that Joe Kenny hit has recovered yet. Ernie . Bingham tells me that it finally got so rough that he forgot all about making baskets he just wanted to get in there and feel his knees and elbows sink into soft, human flesh. Ernie had to be taken out of the game after he had been kicked in the kidneys by some big time plow jockey who was showing the local girls how manly he was. The upshot of the whole regrettable affair is that the team can hardly wait until Dixie and BAC venture into Ogden for a return game and meet good referees like Don Barney who calls what he sees and tries to keep his personal feelings out of the game. That will be quite a night, but if the farmer boys play like they did Saturday there won't be enough players to last the whole game they'll all be out on fouls. The Weber team s 360 mile jaunt into enemy territory was j fruitless as the rough and tum- ble tactics r ;;ie opposition, the i small gymnasiums, and the I Wildcats' inability to hit the i hoop combined to spell defeat for the visiting team. The southern hoopsters parted off in the opening minutes with that brand of basketball which is called wide open playing. Their fast breaking, fast shooting, and wild running play caught Weber off guard, with the result that the i Wildcats could not maintain their slower, more deliberate type of play. It was estimaed that Weber missed' 80 per cent of their shots. As the players put it, "The bucket seemed to have a lid on it." The farmer boys worked on the principle that if they were going to foul a man, they were going to make it good. This was evidenced when' guard Joe Kenny was carried to the floor and rolled several feet by a BAC man who rode Kenny down as he was about to shoot. The referee called that one a foul. The Weber Whip club of 30 girls was on hand to witness both mixups. A welcome feature of their visit was the hospitality shown by the St. George girls. When the Whip club arrived they were welcomed by the St. George women and each Weber girl stayed overnight with one of them. The more athletic southern women then proceeded to trounce the Weber girls in a basketball game, 45-5. The basketball team was not so fortunate in obtaining sleeping facilities. The previous BUSHNELL MEN VIEW CURVACIOUS Veterans of the Bushnell hos - pital filled the stands Thursday night to witness an evening of wet but gay entertainment. The Bushnell pool proved to be the scene of aquatic beauty as the Ogden high school Swimming club brought forth its many talents. The program consisted of a snake dance by the young ladies of the club, which was followed with a demonstration of the breast, crawl, back and butterfly strokes. Ferron Losee, aqua bug extraordinary, attempted his own version of the girls' crawl, passionate breast, Hollywood back, and under water fluttering side strokes. There is no reason to believe that there will not be a like situation this year." Tournament pairing will be made Feb. 24, on the basis ot each team's season record.
