Show WAS A SUCCESS few counties in united states can show such A wide range of fruits As dixie despret Des cret farmer one of tho most successful fruit displays ever held in utah excepting possibly displays made at alio state fair and irrigation congress exhibit at ogdan was held in st george september ath and logli hereafter this fruit festival will be an annual event the festival was created ly the washington county commercial club to advertise atio possibilities of dixie and no scheme could have been conceived which would have served the purpose better no county in the state can produce such an immense vanity as was displayed here in fact few counties in the united states can show such a wide range of fruits including everything from the crisp apple of the temperate climate down to the semi trop ical fig and pomegranate for size color and quality the fruit on exhibition hibi tion could not be excelled the generosity displayed by the commercial club in conducting this exhibit is most commendable the public were admitted to the fruit exhibit free thera were two days of dean sports which were also free and the whole affair was brought to a fitting close by a grand festival at w inch between fourteen and eighteen hundred people were given all the fruit they could possibly cat in alie exhibit practically every town and hamlet of the county was represented the largest exhibit and the greatest variety on exhibition camo from the southern utah experiment farm the exhibit being made by the superintendent joseph T atkin the southern firm 13 to be congratulated not only on the variety and perfection of the fruit but on tho very artistic arrangement among the fresh fruits there were some twenty varieties of grapes five varieties of plums some quinces pomegranates and especially noticeable ere the large aft beet potatoes one weighing five pounds nicely arranged in glass cases were some thirty varieties of dried fruits consisting of peaches prunes applean figa and raising there were also twenty five varieties of bottled fruits put up aholo showing a perfect article santa clara came forward with a big exhibit and of great variety particularly interesting was her display of english walnuts and hungarian prunes which were noticeable for their size and color emphasizes her dried fruits particularly the fig besides showing a great variety of grapes plums mammoth pears peaches and bottled fruits the exhibit from leeds consisted of watermelons water melons and cantaloupes grapes and peaches and canned tomatoes one of the leading features of the leeds exhibit was the exhibit of canned tomatoes made by mr B jams mr jarvis operates a small canning plant at leeds the exhibit from la veram was very artistically arranged and every piece of fruit well displayed some twenty varieties of grapes peaches plums and apples being shown this exhibit was made up largely from the farm of hon thomas judd besides a number of watermelons water melons etc exhibited a largo pyramid of peaches of a gizo and color that 13 seldom seen even at fruit shows rockville had the largest melons that acro exhibited from middleton came a very attractive exhibit of grapes a huge pyramid of various varieties being artistically displaced in the center of their exhibit the largest individual display of grapes was the one made by georgo jarvis of st george he alo al o showed a number of varieties of peaches one entire corner of the exhibit room being covered with elegant bunches of grapes one of the finest d isala s of apples both from the standpoint of size and color and freedom from blemish came from the orchard of P D gifford 0 and should have convinced the most skeptical that washington county can produce a good apple pine valley also had a nice display of apples tho largest and best pomegranates camo from washington the exhibit from hurricane was not as large as some of the others owing to tho fact that this district is comparatively new nevertheless there was enough fruit displayed to show that tins section in a very short time will como rapidly to tho front aa a fruit producing section |
