february 13 1856 a son of jacob and emma Emm gates aGates his parents were pioneers of st george and he was five years old when he came here with them his boyhood days were spent here during part of which he learned the blacksmith trade when 21 years of age he went to the uni varsity of utah which he attended tor for one year afterwards working as bookkeeper tor for the consolidated im clement co cc at salt lake city tor for two years from salt lake be he went to sliver silver reef this county where he worked as a blacksmith tor for seven years and from silver reef to nevada where he followed his trade blacksmith from be lie went to provo where he worked in the furniture store of snow gates jacob gates one of the partners be ing his brother from provo he re turned to st george F F gates was married to laura ashworth in the st george temple march 25 1893 of this hia union sev en children were born all of whom are living as follows airs bert riding salt lake city frank A eiko elko nevada clarence F lyman wyoming kathleen edith cecil and sylvia st george strictly a home man mr gates did not enter into public affairs his home his wife and his family drew him and to them he was devoted he was a musician of ability and played several musical instruments the piano plano violin and cornet especially well his ills hearing for the good in music vms v as very keen and he delighted in playing the softer sweeter kinds of music this love of music has been transmitted to hib his children his ills son clarence conducts an orchestra which playe plays his own compositions ba be bides as blacksmith here until about five ave years ago when ailing falling health compelled him to cease tease hard work the past two years he has been practically unable to do much of anything though he was not tot bedfast until near the end he lie was an upright and nd honorable man ft a good citizen good neighbor devoted husband and loving father his end was peaceful his devoted wife doing all that mortal woman could do to ease his pains and make him as comfortable as possible funeral Sert services icem funeral services were held it in the stake tabernacle sunday attert attenson atte noon oon a he was an ideal citizen and assisted in the up building of this dixie dille country he was more a home man than a public man and came from old stand bys of the church he lie was as always alays interested in seeing his children advance it was a it relief to him to finish anish his life a work tor for he had been sick for tears ears the separation will be keen ly felt by his loved ones but
