Show SHEEPHERDER TIES POIS0NBY MISTAKE Strychnjne, Meant for Coyotes, Almost Causes Man's Death Friday. Walter Harris, a sheepherder, had a narrow escape from death last Friday when he accidentally swallowed poison which had become be-come mixed with a bar of candy in a pocket of his clothing. Harris went to the St. George Drug store in the afternoon and purchased an eighth of an ounce of strychnine and several capsules. cap-sules. He said he was getting it to poison coyotes. About six o'clock that evening eve-ning he turned up at the Angus Cannon home in the west part of town in a serious condition. He was immediately taken to the office of Dr. W. J. Reichmann. At the time little hope was held out for his life, but after the doctor and Marshal John Cottam had worked with him nearly all night, the poison was cleaned from his stomach and he recovered. recov-ered. He said he had taken a walk near the Sugar Loaf after purchasing pur-chasing the poison which he had placed in the same pocket with a bar of candy. In some manner the vial leaked and some of the strychnine got onto the can3y. Harris came here from Imperial Im-perial valley, California. He has no known relatives and is little known in St. George. |
