Operating on a narrow margin, these American Icons graze their cattle and sheep on public lands as well as private pastures. A cold winter or a dry spring can wreck havoc on their operations and even undo them financially. The last thing they need, ranchers say, is more regulation by federal agencies. More and more, the offspring of the American rancher are taking up professions outside agriculture.
