Show JANUARY 3, 2001 | a WASATCH COUNTY COURIER Remembrance of e Things Past BS — / ARTS REVIEW CONTINUED FROM A1 door concerts at Deer Valley, Park City and Sundance lured listeners from their homes. Pretty soon, summer was in full swing. Dust could be seen hovering over Heber’s arena as the Utah High School Rodeo Finals got underway. Before you could hang your Stetson, the Mountain Valley Stampede was at a full gallop. More than 800 people showed up for Heber Valley Fair Days’ demolition derby, enjoying the affordable, wholesome atmosphere. Dances, carnival rides and concerts corralled twice as many people.as in 1999. Cowgirls, honored war veterans and popcorn—the summer was not quite so different than a century ago. : The Wasatch Back was just getting iin warmed up for Labor Day weekend’s Swiss Days, including a tradition County that some, ‘Commissioner Mike Kohler, can’t remember a year without. Overcast skies did not intimidate more than 70,000 visitors from perusing Midway’s 200 craft and down-home cooking booths. Vendors from thousands of miles away traveled to the successful show. The tradition attracted competition from a similar fair in Charleston, the Fifth annual “Olde Tyme” Country Crafts and Antiques Show, which displayed 80 booths. Fall days brought cool nights, but. drama students at Wasatch High were getting ready to sizzle in their December came, and an abundant snow pack once again couldn’t deter people. Thousands of visitors .attended the annual Swiss Christmas celebration, a multi-day event, which included hundreds of nativity scenes from around the world. The 55-mem- ber Swiss Ringers, Chorus and live nativity Handbell at the Tatton Barn and food and craft collection at the Midway Town Hall were a big attraction, almost as big as the jolly Father’ and Mother Christmas. Nearby, at Charleston’s Sundance Farms’ Holiday Market, visitors were offered a quaint alternative to the crowded Salt Lake malls. Throughout the month, hundreds of the young-atheart hopped aboard the Heber Valley Railroad Polar Express on its journey to the North Pole. Once again, January has returned, bringing hope for the new year, and a little yearning for the past.
