The usual resting of the eye due to gradual shifts was omitted and the efftet was rather hectic and straining, which was the effect desired. The camera can be used to obtain remarkable effects. To appreciate the work of the camera and the cameraman, ask yourself the - question, where was the camera placed in order to secure this or that scene? By mounting the camera on a traveling crane 'it is possible to get a moving shot over the heads of a crowd, at a second-storwindow, and. other unusual positions. Another device frequently used is that of trucking the camera past or along with the players. Scenes have been shot from above, .as is common in musical comedy dance scenes, card table scenes, and views from up stairs looking down. Football huddles have been photographed by pointing the camera up into the faces of the players. In the French picture, "Red Head, the hard hearted mother is often photographed from an angle lower than the one usually used. This gave the spectator an indication of how the mother was seen by her little son. In any shot, the type should be used that gives the audience a clearer view of some important action or thought. Filters and special lenses also are used to give certain effects. You have seen shots in which there was an atmospheric softness that gave glamour to the scene. This effect is used esand other pecially in iove scenes shots whre the director wishes to give a romantic quality to the scene. It is done either by shooting the scene with a special lens, or by a special screen placed over the regular lens. Some filters darken the sky so that white clouds stand out in beautiful relief. ou may have seen scenes in foggy, steamy swamps in some pictures. These are made under ordinary conditions, probably in the studio, and shot through special fog fillers. If you have seen pictures in which scenes apparently were taken through keyhopes, portholes, field glasses, and so on, you will be interested to know that little metal masks with openings of the desired shapes are fitted into the camera which then actually takes the picture in the shape intended.
