Elder 1urgener reports having enjoyed his missionary labors, very much. He was recently elected president of the stake M Men organization. A welcome home reception in Reed's honor was held Dec. 20 in the ward amusement hall. The program: Trio, Mrs. Wilford Muhlestein, Mrs. J. V. Ford and Mrs. Pearl Jones; reading by Miss Marianne Campbell; solo by Lloyd Snow, accompanied by Ruth Stott v,and Max Andrews; ' Christmas story by Lola Workman; violin solo by Owen Ford. Two numbers were also furnished by the mens glee club and the choir. Following a piano solo by Ruth Stott, short talks were given by Sidney H. Cluff, . Bishop A. Ray Ekins and the missionary. An effort wil lbe made to get two missionaries from the Edgemont ward to labor in Grand View. Elder David L. Rowley, Jr., has charge of this work. The first report meeting wil lbe held Thursday, February 1 at the Seminary, 7 p. m. Charles C. Rich has the honor of being the first man ordained an apostle in Utah. He received this honor of which he was entirely worthy, February 12, 1849, in Salt Lake City. At the battle of Crooked River in 1838, when David W. Patten fell mortally wounded, while bullets were flying thick and fast, lie laid down his own sword and administered the ordinance of laying on hands to the dying hero, After which he took command and the saints won the battle. He was a member of the High Council in Nauvoo. Presided over the Mount Pisgah branch of the church during the winter of 1847. He led a company of saints to Utah the following summer. During the ab- -. sence of the twelve, on their return to winter quarter, he acted in the valley as counselor to Father John Smith who left to perside over the coolny. Brother Rich was noted for his fatherly counsel, an example of it was given in 1857 to the Arkansas company who arrived in Salt Lake the last of July and camped on the Jordan. He advised them to take the route around the north end of Salt Lake as being preferable to the southern road. The company was so far impressed with his advice that . - 4U . Blake, who received a call for a mission in the Centraf States, December 13. He left for his field of labor this month. Max is a graduate of the Lincoln High school, has attended the B. Y. U. and is( graduate of the Sharon Stake) Seminary. Max arrived at mission headquarters in Independence, Mo., Jan- uary 13, and was assigned to, labor in the Independence district, Kansas, City branch.
