Show Thursday, May 28, 1942 TIIE VOICE OF S II AEON Senate Committee Action Ilolds Out For Deer Creek Priorities Sum of $913,000 Added to Deer Creek Appropriations. Sponsors Expect Act Preliminary to Granting Priority Good news came out ol' Washington tills week in an item stating that the Senate Appropriation Committee had increased the budget appropriation for the Deer Creek project by an additional fcum of $913,000 for the 1943 fiscal year. This action on the part of the Senate la being interpreted officials connected with the Creek Deer Projecf as a qjear indication that tola project ia regarded as vital to the war effort end will in due lime receive a rating at' a defense project. Applications for priority rating? have been filed with the War Production Board for many months. Applications were made by the Provo River WTater Users Association, the sponsoring or7 ganizatlon for ilie project, and by Commissioner John C. Page of the Bureau of Reclamation. Several months ago worn from Washington came to the effect that the project waa receiving favorable action by the army and navy boards which have charge of priorities and would in a short time be given a priority rating. However, since that tiibe various complications have arisen and It has been questionable whether or not the project would he given a priority rating. At 'east, the action of the Senate Committee is the first official action of any kind which indicates that favorable consideration is being given to the priority applications. In the applications heretofore filed it has been pointed out that the project was vital to the water supply for the increasing de mands being made upon the cities and towns because of the defense industries being located in central Utah. It is averted, for instance, that the choice of Utah for the Columbia Stee! Geneva Works steel plant waa partly determined by the fact that the Deer Creek project would be in a post tion to supply ample water to insure a safe surply for operation of a plant of such magnitude. It is stated at the time the project was announced that a contract had been entered into with the Metropolitan Water District of Salt Lake City whereby that district would supply the project out of its holdings in the Deer to Creek project some 17,000 20,000 acre feet of water. Such a supply of water would be available only in the event that the Weber Diversion canal is enlarged to 1000 second feet capacity Willi Our. Gommunily Organizations.
