' lEj . PROPRIETORS Wholesome Use ot Leisure Time Through Hobbies government. The above proverb infers tbat idleness often breeds a monster that may threaten the very existence of mans highest ideals. 1 am not stretching the facts when I gay, that most ot onr lawlessness, lack of chivalry and patriotism are hatched among the loafer and idle class. Can it be that there are far too many, so called, husbands and fathers ganging up, day after day. In the pool halls and upon the street corners, while their wives are taking In washings? Men who are accomplishing most in the world are constantly figuring how they can squeeze out a little more time to catch up with their back work. 8Nt so with the loafing class. They are suffering from fear of wotkj called "laborphobia", otherwise described as that tired feeling. What these men need is a clean mind in a healthy body, obtained by fostering some wholesome hobby in their early lives which would have changed their philosophy and ontlook on life. An Surely, no one will challenge the truth of the statement That man is most valuable who idle brain is the devils workshop. is most aBeful. Proper use of leisure time makes for character, honesty, and good citizenship. No statesmanship ever came from idleness. Crime and idleness are synonymous. Boys and girls must learn that their spare time should be tied up with activities that produce the most pleasure, service, love of home and country, which in turn make for trne Americanism. A noted scout leader once said "Show me what a boy does In his spare time and I will tell you what kind of a man he will become. If that statement be true, then leisure is a great moulder of charade and. It behoovee every loyal citizen to lend bis best efforts in support of every constructive undertaking by the church, school, or state, in planning and patting into operation wholesome leisure activities for the youth of the nation. If freedom, loyalty and patriotic devotion to our great nation is to endure, the leisure time of our young people must be productive of wholesome personal contributions to the cultural and governmental phases ot onr community life. These tine virtuee can beet be attained through proper atUiuuCa &ud these attitudes are the result Of g activities. wholesome thinking, proper training and His none. He man. had Leisure stag no problem with early entire time was taken up with securing of food, clothing and shelter. During the golden age of Greece and the Imperial rule of Rome, the free men enjoyed much spare time. Their leisure was productive ot a great cultural civilization. In the end the Roman Empire tell to a physically superior race, due to a lowering of health standards and the loss of their former national patriotism. Their morals dropped to a very low ebb. However, we must not overlook the contribution of the Greeks, tor through their philosophy that a beautiful body should go with a beautiful eoul they produced a great recreational program out of which grew the famous Olympic Games. In the Middle Ages wealthy nobility found much unoccupied time at the cruel expense of serfs and peasants. Knighthood, that great Medieval social and recreational movement, was born during this period. It was the direct result of lolsure, and many of the fine virtues 'that we have today had their beginnings In this interesting historical setting. The complex machine age has damped squarely Into the laps of our present civilization an almost unbelievable amount ot unoccupied time. This precious spare time element has literally been showered npon every human sonl. What a golden opportunity this generation has for great achievement. Can we take It and make it produce dividends In clean, wholesome and abundant living, or will It bring on an added crime wave, cultural decay, and a cankered soul 7 Much has been said about leisure, but not until the waning of tbe recent depression, was much done In a constructive way to utilize our spare time. Wholesome use of leisure la the burnin- - issue of the day and it is squarely up to the schools to encourage, train and plan tbe programs for this leisure time activity. It is true tbat the church, atate and federal government are now fostering extensive recreational programs, but the schools must supply the trained leaders. A new and very important work, therefore, has fallen to the administrative forces ot our educational systems in providing a curriculum rich in music, art, mechanics, recreational and athletic activities. It should be tbe function of the schools to create an earnest g desire in the students to acquire clean and hobbies. Proper training and organizing of more hobby clubs and bolding of more hobby conventions will go a long way in building up interest in this field. It will be well for colleges and universities to incorporate into their guidance and "education for youth classes, a liberal amount of material bearing npon this Important subject. As school administrators, are we conscious of tbe urgent need of teaching the art of so that students during their unoccupied time can maintain a strong resistance to alluring temptations? Every young person should have the urge to carry on bravely, honestly and patriotically In his moments of relaxation and rest from regular duties. Hobbies have been the ladders to success for many business and professional people. They not only afford relaxation and rest but their economical values have often furnished a base for a sound business career. Hobbles sIbo play a very Impor ant Tole in onr social structure. If we can do a thing well it may be a stimulus to others. It ran also prove to be an Invaluable factor in developing confidence, reliance and It is one positive way of promoting a desire for more noble public expression, which Is so sorely needed by many backward young people of today. If we had more wholesome hobbies there would be less tobacco and liquor consumed. The number of Venereal diseases would' very materially diminish. There would be a noticable decrease in crime, poverty and misery. The Insane asylems. penal institutions, bouses of correction, pnd places of 111 fame would feel a chastening hand There would be more church going, more efficient public officials, larger bank accounts, and a much happier and more prosperous people. And. I am sure, that our motor highways would be a very .much safer place to travel upon than they are at the present time. Why not keep a youthful figure and grow old gracefully by applying yourself to the manly art of fancy quarter of .1 This is the new sounding drum, oval in shape, smaller and lighter than the first standard It als incorporates the rotary standard into this one piece of equipment.
